How to connect external battery charger
Hello all. 2008 with Z51 option. Battery needs some external charging as it sat for quite a while b4 I purchased. I have a Sears automatic battery charger. I’ve read posts about using remote post and ground location for this and saw others that say battery connection is ok. I’m a 20yr aviation Mechanic with an Avionics background, so we have always used external power plugs. Any advice is appreciated!!

I used a Shumacher 1.5 amp battery maintainer on mine. Purchased at Wal Mart for around $20 a few years back. I then swapped the alligator clips for an aftermarket cigarette plug style adapter to plug into the accessory outlet In the lower front dash just in front of the shifter. Works great keeping the battery at full charge. Note, this is a maintainer, not a charger for a dead or severely depleted battery.

I have a C-tek with a magnetic connector in the front grill opening. this is by far the easiest way to connect the maintainer. Then when I back out it automatically disconnects.

I believe he was asking where to make the connections. I did mine as shown in the picture below. Positive is hooked to the post at the fuse block. Negative is hooked to frame bolt at location marked with arrow.

Yes, either location is fine. What does the manual say?

I have a Battery Tender Jr. it came with a harness that I attached right to the battery clamp nuts. It has a plug that attaches right to my Tender.

I have a C-trek and use the cigarette lighter/adaptor for charging. There's a small indent in the door sill for the wire to pass through without getting crushed. It has always worked fine.

I use 2 CTEK chargers on my 4 rides. I like them being off the cars, so I can switch them around on other rides.
One is for the cig. type mentioned above and the other just hooks up to the battery.

I also use a maintainer, not a charger. Before you plug it in, put the positive on the positive (first) and then the neg on the neg (last). Then plug it in at the wall. I charge mine every two weeks or so (not driven sometimes for a couple of weeks at a time and not much at all during the winter months if sloppy out). I dont leave it on all the time, once its charged and the little light tells me so, I will put the charger away until needed again. The original battery lasted almost 8 years. The 2015 Delco replacement lasted 5 years.

I did it this way because the closest wall plug is at the front of the car.

i connected my charger old school directly to the battery terminals, connecting negative last, with the charger off. I then turned it on with a 2 amp charge rate and it worked fine. Thank you all for the info.

The problem with connecting to the battery terminals (assuming you have the stock terminals) is that what you connect to uses a convex shaped nut, this convex shape is what allows it to tighten up the battery terminals themselves snug to the battery, putting a terminal for your charger under this nut could potentially not allow your battery terminals to tighten properly,
