Don't do it
Really though, if I were to do this again, after getting the LED install done, I'd take the housing to a body shop and have them mix up a tinted clear coat. I just had too many issues using the Nite Shades and then a clear coat. I think it works better if you apply an adhesion promotor before applying each product, but I'm not sure.
The other day I removed the lights to install side markers, and used painters tape just below the screw so that I wouldn't scratch the light when removing it. Of course when I pulled off the tape, it took some clear coat with it . I think this may have been a light that I didn't redo with the adhesion promotor.
I'd consider selling mine actually and take a hard look at the Morimotos. They look AMAZING at night, but I now wish I had blacked out the reflector. I'm not sure if I'll be able to remove the lenses and redo them without breaking them. The clear coat issue bothers me too, but I don't want to sand them down for like the 5th time to have them redone :-(

I actually already tinted them with night shades and about five coats of clear. I guess i got lucky, didn't have any issues. Wet sanded them after every coat. I was talking about the LED install, lol.

FYI. When spraying with Nightshades there is really no reason to clear coat. More then likely five coats of clear and not enough drying time in between coats caused your problem. I did mine six years ago and lightly polished, still look great.

Those of you with Morimoto tails, if you want a simple eye patch int he center to give it a dark look in the middle without affecting the outside, we have an option for you. Use code "bestlights" at check out.

Vinyl is a good, replaceable option, but keep in mind that paint is the only permanent, issue-free option - this is why we only offer paintwork on our tails typically. Our paint results in a beautiful finish that will last the test of time and will shine glossy for years to come - did i mention that it takes absolutely no additional effort since they come already finished and ready to install?!

here's a link to the morimoto tails from our site:
https://www.umnitza.com/exterior-tai...-morimoto.html
You can see you have the option to paint, apply an eye patch style stick on, or just leave them alone (our favorite is red).
Our painter paints hundreds of bumpers for us a year, we can easily vary the paint of the tails to be darker, lighter, more cherry, less cherry, etc.
To help customers decide on which is best for them when getting Morimoto tails, it helps to determine based on longevity, permanence, preference/simplicity, and of course color (of car).
Longevity:
Clear film - will generally not last as long - though on tails, the difference is likely negligible compared to paint
Paint - pretty much the life of the tails.
Permanence:
Clear film - can be peeled off and replaced with lighter, darker, etc.
Paint - pretty much buy new tails if you get tired of the look.
Preference:
Clear film - install of the eyepatch - unlike other films - is super easy requiring very limited experience, so no big deal
Paint - pretty much paint as you go, but be careful if you chip it, the clear is good to prevent most minor scrapes
Finally the most subjective...
If your car color is lighter, we usually recommend the RED tails, if your car is darker, we usually recommend the lighter tails.
But obviously, if you have a theme where most of your stuff is darker, then painting the complete tail assembly smoked or charcoal is the only way to go for you.
Either way, we're available for consult: 877 486 6489
