C6 LS3 - Engine Noise (with video)
After a 500 miles trip earlier this week, I noticed a new strange metallic noise coming from the battery side of the engine.
Went to the mechanic to check it, and after a few minutes he said that the issue is with the air conditioning compressor, which might be, but he did not sound 100% sure. Scanning tools did not detect anything.
Think I'll still leave the car there for the service, but just in case anyone has had any experience with this, below is a 10 seconds video that I made when I stopped to check the noise.
Has anyone heard anything similar?
Thanks for any input

Retired & lovin' it!
Instead of guessing, get yourself a cheap mechanics stethoscope & pin point exactly where the noise is coming from. This one is from Harbor Freight in the US for less than $5....there must be a similar store in CZ.

If he pulls the A/C belt and runs the motor he will know for sure if its the compressor or not... W.W

It could be the tensioner pulley bearing dry of grease.
Drive pulley tensioner - PT # 12569301 (top one)
A/C pulley tensioner - PT # 12595289 (bottom one)

Thanks everyone for the suggestions, they are all quite valid, especially the one about a stethoscope; hopefully I'll manage to get one already tomorrow. I agree that the sound is a bit more like a bad bearing, but at this time I won't exclude anything.
Over the weekend I'll have some time to check on the engine, so I will let you know what do I find out.
Cheers

Is the noise only present with the ac engaged? My LS1 made the same noise, it was the clutch lining on inside the ac pump pulley. When the solenoid tried to engage the ac the noise would start. Look for evidence of dusty and rusty iron deposits on stuff around the pulley. I just disconnected the ac belt and put the roof down if hot.

Just wanted to give an update if anyone's curious:
That noise came indeed from the AC clutch/pulley. Will have to go back to it after the holidays to understand what exactly is the problem with it, but it's kind of reassuring knowing at least what was the source.
Thanks a lot for the pointers

Hope you get it sorted soon. On my Camaro you could order a new compressor from Rock Auto in the states and get it mailed to the uk for about $220 inc post and taxes.

Had to look up what was that, as I was unfamiliar with the brand; I don't think they are in Europe, but we do have similar things over here
Cheers, your guess helped a lot. Your guess wins the rights to claim a cold one, should you ever find yourself in Prague
And thanks also for the suggestion for Rock Auto, will definitely include it in my research

Thank you for providing an update - mine is making the same sound. Prior to reading your post I changed my tensioner & idler pully with no improvement. I'll now inspect my A/C pully, that was next on my list and feel better knowing that 'it' is most likely the issue (I say that as the HB is running true). Thanks again.

Sounds like compressor clutch bearing went south.
Easy way to check, turn the a/c off and off with the motor running, and see if the noise goes away when the a/c clutch kicks in. If it does, then just the compressor clutch can be changes alone on the compressor.
As for tension pulleys and idle pulley, they tend to start making noise around the 50K mark, since Gm did not grease them well to start with.
But yes, sounds like a dry bearing somewhere that has gone south.
