Permanent 2005 Column Lock Resolution from GM
ADMINS: Recommend this be a sticky on the C6 General Discussion and C6 Tech/Performance...
There is finally a permanent solution to end the column lock failures for 2005 manual transmission equipped cars. GM has issued a TSB (#18-NA-346, issued Nov 14, 2018) authorizing the complete disabling of the column lock system at the dealership. The TSB directs the removal of the locking plate, replacing it with a retaining plate and flashing the BCM to ignore the steering column lock module.
Too bad it took GM 13 years to come up with the TSB to permanently solve the column lock problem...I would still have my '05 if this had been available two years ago when I made the decision in Oct 2016 to trade mine after eight failures and having the dealer "fix" it time after time, only to fail again.
Even if you have not had a failure and/or installed the electronic bypass, I would have the TSB done.
Here is video describing the process:

Yeah, like I'm going to trust a dealership to take my column apart and not screw anything else up on my car.. I think I will just leave the bypass in place, at least that works without any problems.. Now, if they want to replace the "rearend" with something stronger, I may go for that.....WW

If you mean on the column lock, No, I installed the bypass before mine failed.. Didn't want to be stranded because of it failing.. If you mean on the rearend, yes, it was replaced, it failed while under warranty for the first owner.. If I lived near a dealership like "Kerbeck" or one of the other large dealerships I may have it done, but the smaller ones screw up more then they fix ..WW

At least you know there is a permanent solution if you have a column lock failure; just make sure you have it done at a dealership with a GM certified corvette tech.

Lucky you with no column lock failures; I was lucky that I never had any problems with the rear end; I even had 4.10's in mine for 75,000 miles with no problems...

Does GM handle TSB's the same as warranty, meaning covered by the manufacturer, or is this one on the consumer? I had the recall performed years ago on my 2005 manual C6, but and not occasionaly getting the Service Steering Column Lock warning on my DIC. When I do, I have to put the care back in to Reverse, turn off the ignition, and go thru the start process all over again.

Owned my '05 for a little less than 2 years with no problems. From service records the column lock has never been an issue on my car either. I might get the is TSB done but not sure I trust taking it to a dealer.

Sorry, yes I know the work would have to be done at a dealer. I am not crazy about the idea of them digging into the steering column is the issue. Do you know if the cost of this is covered by GM like a recall would be?

As for digging into the steering column, I had to have my ‘05 repaired eight times with no problem...if I can remove the airbag, steering wheel, clock spring, locking plate and then everything works fine after put it back together, the dealer should be able to remove everything to install the new thingamabob with no problem.

It is my understanding that this TSB is paid for by the car owner.
I will I’ll be having tis mod installed as soon as the parts come in.

I picked up the parts for this TSB today and discussed the labor with my local Chevy dealer today. They want to charge me $600 in labor and suggest I drop the car off for a full day or more. They were not sure they could complete the modification in a day. They have one Corvette specialist.
Really!!! I guess they have no work standard for this yet.
im going out for more estimates since I seem to have temporarily fixed the problem and can wait this out for a while.

I am going to try to call a couple dealers in the Cincy area today and see if they know anything about this TSB and/or can quote a price to install. I will post what I find out about this too.
