I understand feeling like that, but the chance of it going from a 1000 dollar repair to a 10k replacement is better than 50%. That is a pretty big chunk, that looks like it’s been whacked.

So what's worst case, it blows and new motor is like what 8k..little more? Hell, tearing it down to inspect is going to cost 4k! I'd drive it.

Start a pool and take bets. This will cover the cost of new motor if it goes!

My bet if you'll go another 100k miles without burning any oil or have any problems related to this little piece..if something was going to happen I would think it would have already

I found a used engine for 3.2k? So a third of the cost with the risk of not finding anything. I pulled off the valve covers and everything looked fine.

Do you have better (close-up) pics? The piece almost looks like it has some copper in it, but it's hard to tell from the pics. And do I see a spiral machine mark on the curved surface? That ... and copper... might indicate valve guide.

I posted earlier kinda tongue in cheek that maybe it's a piece thats been laying around in there and just now found it's way to the magnet. That may not be to far fetched. Heck....how do you know that that piece wasn't picked up by the magnet on the way to the plug hole during the last oil change and just didn't get noticed? Bottom line is if the thing runs and sounds fine, and all the gauges read right.....drive it.....

Whatever it is.........it's obvious that there's more of it somewhere in the flow path.

Looks too small for a valve stem (5/16" dia.) application, IMHO.

My money says it's a piece of timing chain roller.
