took an alternate (and much longer) route the past 2 days. And it doesn't beep. WTF is going on?! I've let someone else hear it too. Right as the exit was approaching, I said here it comes, and BEEP. it did it. Glad it didn't mysteriously stop since someone else was in the car.

I had one when I lived in the San Francisco Bay area to electronically pay my bridge tolls. They State also uses them to calculate traffic speeds on the Interstates. A sensor on the side of the road will interrogate the unit between sensors to calculate the road congestion. The unit beeps each time it passes a sensor.
When I used to go to the airport to pick up someone, it would beep just as I reached the dropoff point. Every time. I wasn't being charged for anything, so I have no idea why it did that.
