Default How to Start C6 When Key is Lost

First off I'm just trying to get where I can here the engine running in a wrecked C6 car I bought. Wreck cracked the oil pan so I'd really like to here it running before it's pulled.

Bought from an insurance auction but I didn't get any keys or fob. I guess I could get a replacement key off of the internet and have the dealership cut it?? I've never had one of the flip out keys remade before though.

Please PM with any info so that we're not putting all the info out on the internet.

Thanks!

I don't think a key is going to do you any good. You need a programmed fob.

If you do get to the point of starting it, make sure the oil hasn't drained out of the crankcase.

You need a key to program any C6 fob, which may be purchased from GM directly.

If you have no keys or fobs, then the only way (legally) to do this is show proof of ownership to a GM/Buick/AMC dealer with the VIN. They can cut a physical key. Order a fob and do the long (no fobs recognized) programming.

I think I would be a bit leery of the condition of the engine if the wreck were sufficient enough to crack the oil pan. Best of luck to you.

Dealer wants about $35 for the key cut to the car, fob can be purchased on Amazon or eBay for about $60, but will need a program. Good luck

Yeah I deftinatly want to make sure I hear the engine running before I pull it. I've started patching the bottom of the oil pan where it's cracked in the front.

I can only guess that you will have a mess with shorted/missing wiring when you power up the system.
Look for a youtube video on how to get the motor running on a stand...that's basically where you are.

In fact...

as scrap value goes, Corvettes are probably worth less than the average car (less metal).

Seriously, what is the value of a corvette that is that bad a shape?

I cannot understand the push to hear it run before pulling the motor. If you get it fired and there is a rod knocking are you then going to bunch the whole program? It doesn't appear the motor is ever going to power that car down the hiway so it seems like it's gotta come out.
Please enlighten us on your plans...

I dunno. I think i'd want to hear it run also. Provided of course that getting it to run isn't to big of a hassle. Knowing the thing runs at least lets you know that any tool time you spend won't be all for naught, and you're talking about a lot of tool time going from one car to another......but then again....just what the heck do I know...LOLOL.....

But the motor has to come out whether it runs or not. Unless, of course, the OP bought the car by the pound and, if it doesn't run, it ALL goes in the scrap pile.

Looks like that is where it belongs.

Well you could at least put my whole quote in so as not to try and make me look stupider than I already am....LOL..... You may have hit the nail on the head. Maybe it's going to the crap yard or is gonna be re-sold for parts if it doesn't run. So what does one do....spend all the time putting it in a well fed body and frame, then get in and get it started and then holy crapolla....."well it started, but I can hear at least 2 rods that are begging to get out through the block any day now !!!.....This isn't like buying a motor off of a rack from Billy Bobs junk yard. If theres an opportunity to fire her up before going through all the hassle of an engine swap i'd do the same......

Default Fob

No disrespect but I wouldn't suggest you buying a fob from the internet. I did and the dealership couldn't program it for whatever reason. I was out of pocket a $60 fee then had to buy their FOB and pay for it to be programmed................lesson learned "Stop being so Cheap"

if you don't have a fob to begin with then yes you probably have to go to the dealer with proof of ownership and buy a cut key and fob programmed to the vin. The $60 internet (GM) fobs work just fine when you have a fob and program them yourself.

Obviously this car will never run and move on it's own ever again. I knew that when I bought it as I bid online and never saw the car in person until it was delivered to my house. I should have explained before that if this engine has no internal damage it will be cleaned up and immediately put into one of my projects cars! So it is VERY important to hear the engine run before it's pulled out.

If I had the place to keep them, I'd love to have a Corvette only salvage yard. Corvette parts are generally very sought after unlike other high performance cars I've scrapped in the past.

Thanks for the explanation. Just me, but I think with all the front end damage, trying to wrestle around in the engine bay for wires. etc, it might be easier to pull the motor and test stand it.
Having said that, the youtube I posted shows how to get it to run outside the car. Same steps should apply inside the car. I would want to have water circ so I could run it enough to tell what, if anything, is broke.
Good luck, and keep us informed...

Thanks for the positive suggestions so far. After doing some internet research I now realize that the fob is basically the key. I had only driven a C6 many years ago and hadn't even paid attention that this car is Push Button!

Found a guy locally who has a spare fob. According to the Long Fob Prog instructions I still need a trunk key as well....

Did you happen to look in the glove box to see if one of the fobs might be in the fob slot? Ive seen them in used cars like that.
