Nav units
I have to admit I'm biased about using GPS to navigate. I spent a lot of years touring the country on motorcycles and used Garmin nav units when they became available. When we toured, we always enjoyed taking the path less traveled meaning two lane roads not interstates. In the days of paper maps that wasn't an issue, you just had to have a fairly OK short term memory or a tank bag to put the map in. The Garmin units let me plan the route on my PC and load it into the unit. I could restrict use of interstates etc. so that if I wanted a replan due to road conditions, traffic etc. the unit would try and keep me on my desired roads.
I have never seen or heard of an automotive unit that will let you preplan a route. My wife and I still prefer 2 lane roads when traveling so we seldom use stock nav systems on a trip, just locally if the destination isn't somewhere we know.
I rambled on I know, so to restate: I only use the stock nav unit to navigate somewhere in my local area (hundred mile radius or so), not on a long trip.

I have to disagree. I have planed a 21 day road trip to Calgary Canada then headed west to B C and Victoria then thru Washington to California. Put all hotels including phone #s and restaurants. Did all that before I started on trip. Then just called each one up as i needed them day to day. Worked great. Trip was 4,600 mi. Very

Since my 2011 GS didn't come with Nav (it's a 2LT) .... I now use a Garmin.
Nice big 6" screen, and free updates for life with the Garmin
