Default Corvette plus snow = WTF!!!

Today's Public Service announcement.....

I know most of you don't drive your vette everyday. I do. Today it snowed over ice. Well let me tell you...... I've driven and raced every thing(almost ) in the last 40 years and this car is the absolute worst vehicle I've ever driven in slick conditions! I was amazed at how bad the active handling feature is in these conditions. After a couple of miles of it trying to drive me in a ditch I finally turned it off. Immediate improvement but still a very twitchy drive to say the least. I think the GY run Flats were the biggest problem. I hate those damn tires with a passion! So...unless you absolutely have to drive in snow , dont!

Yes, not surprising at all. I don't think Corvettes have ever been good snow cars. Snow tires might help. I knew that before owning my C2 and C6. Have winter driver cars. Would not want to have to depend on a Vette for snow driving.

One of the best driver snow cars I ever drove were old Cavaliers. A 99 and an 02. They went through snow like a jeep.

Actually if you were driving on ice under snow I can understand you having trouble keeping it on the road. Scary feeling driving on ice with even a 4x4. No control steering or braking and you are at the mercy of the ice. Last bad ice storm we had here I was lookin for somebodys front yard to slide into just to get off the ice.

drove my C5 in the snow for 2 years before I got it. I always turned traction control off, it did more harm than good. I will not drive the c6 in snow however. Been driving a Liberty, and Cherokee so far this winter.

Tires make all the difference in weather conditions. The GY run flats are terrible summer tires already never meant for anything less than 40f let alone freezing mark.

I have Bridgestone Potenza runflats all season on mine. Due to a move to a new house and some bad timing conditions, I had a few days of driving my C6 in snowy/icy conditions. It was fine and even did near highway speeds on a few blizzard like days.

There are a few people I know who have spent winters driving their c5/c6's all winter. Straight forward tire change to winters on spare rims got them through fine.

Stick some summers on a AWD WRX and drive in the snow/slick/ice and see how that works out. It won't and you will be in the ditch quick.

No RWD will be good on ice, much less a C6.

I was caught in icy conditions and it helped to put it into 3rd (A6) sport mode . Keept me going slowly.

I had to load mine on a trailer a couple of days ago right after it snowed an inch. Luckily the next door neighbor was home to help push. It would not even move under its own power with the Michelin PSS tires.

Yea, when I lived in DE, I played in the snow a couple times with my 2008, but you had to baby it, as you said. I had Michelin all seasons on it, so it actually gripped pretty well, in the 1 - 3 inch snow range.

Here in Florida, my closest experience was on the Daytona Speedway (Rolex course) during a rainy HDPE event, with Hoosiers. It was like driving on snot, you had to go verrrrry slow in the turns. On the banking, you HAD to drive almost exactly 85 mph. If you slowed, the rear starting falling off the track, and faster, the rear would climb the track. I did a couple laps and then got off the track, to let my rear puckers subside

I had a mustang cobra and a Chevy dually when I lived in Utah. Rear wheel drive vehicles stuck in the snow. It did helped a lot when I added weight to the trunk.

NEWSFLASH:

Corvettes are high-performance sports cars meant to be driven with spirit -- or raced -- in fairly mild temperatures on mostly dry roads. To do otherwise is to risk having a fender-bender -- or worse.

Four-wheel drive vehicles are made for snow/ice/muddy conditions. Not having that, at least drive a "regular" car with snow tires, one that won't cost an arm and a leg to have fixed if you slide into something.

Not going to let my Vette mix it today with the 0.1 inch of snow we got last night.

I drive mine in northeastern NC year round with all season non run flats since we rarely see any snow, but it's sitting in the garage on a battery tender right now. We are supposed to get between 9-13" throughout the day tomorrow and that will make for an interesting few days for sure. The Elizabeth City area comes to a grinding halt with anything over 2" so I think "Vicky" will be sitting safely in the garage for a little while. Lol

I agree. I drove my Corvette in the snow for 5-6 years with Nittos and PS2's. The trip was about 25 miles each way. Sometimes snow would start after I got to work. On those days the drive home was always insanely bad. The worst thing about driving it in the snow was when I'd hit a small incline... the tires would slowly lose traction and the *** end would basically start to creep around.. not fun.

Everyone has different opinions but I would never drive my Corvette in snow. Snow and salt will make a major mess out of the undercarriage.

Yes I agree the Corvette's do not do well in snow and work better with the traction control off.

Four inches of snow here last night. A local TV news reporter was live on the scene of a C-6 Corvette that'd slid in to a ditch. They were commenting it was a good day to keep your Corvette at home.

How do you old guys live in such cold climate? 40 degrees is considered freezing here in California. Women break out with the scarfs and Uggs when it gets below 75 here LOL.

LOL, it was a balmy 0° here this morning.

Where it was really cold, was in Siberia, where it was -62° F.

-12.5 here last night...generally, everything that is good on warm, dry roads is bad on icy, snowy roads. Wide tires, light weight, stiff suspension, lots of power...etc, etc.
