Plug tire or need a new one?

An extra thought. I do have a lot of experience from my younger years working in an independent shop. The only time we used inside patches was if the hole in the tire was too big for a plug. Because the nail is still in the tread section of the tire a plug should work. I also have never ever seen a plug come loose from a tire. Please don't allow yourself to get ripped off.

All here should check out a company called stop&go. They make plug kits that are awsome. They use mushroom plugs and a special tool to insert them. Those will never come out plus the air pressure seals the mushroom head against the carcass so they never leak. They are expensive but i carry a kit in my vette and in my dd which does not have a spare either and non run flat. I have one tire plugged on my dd,
20 k miles now, not even the slightest air leak.

Technically, you need to replace the tire because it's too close to the sidewall to repair. Practically, you can probably do it.
Better than on my AWD Subaru ... if you replace one tire, you have to replace all four if there's any appreciable wear. It keeps the tire diameters within spec for their AWD system.

Read posts 7 and 23, that kit was designed for plugging radial belted motorcycle tires for 140+mph bikes. The motorcycle tire cross section is round, not all that different from the area you are looking at plugging. The rubber plugs are very soft and will easily seal a hole like that. I've done hpde's on plugs closer to the center without issue. Stop n Go makes an excellent kit. You can even get a small and powerful air compressor from the same sources.

Personally, I would plug it.....just long enough to do a few smoke shows and burn off the remaining tread on my way to buy new tires. Tires are one place I want no Gamble's or compromises.

No gambles, no compromises on tires. But for a forum with so much unnecessary maintenance and preemptive replacement of parts, I'm always amazed at the attitude towards fixing tires...especially when all the manufacturers agree on what is correct and what is not...

Most will tell you it is not reparable, but I had a screw in the exact same place on a week-old Michelin PS+A/S ZP tire. I brought it back to the shop, and they said they could try to patch it, but they didn't think it would hold, but why not try it? If it didn't hold, they would replace it.
They patch/plugged it, and that tire lasted 68,000 miles.
eta: I don't race, nor would I ever consider racing if a tire had been previously compromised.

Also Dynaplug, use 'em on motorcycles, carry a kit in the C7 but haven't used it.

Mine? I would probably try a plug. I would also be forever nervous it would come apart. Try a plug and see if it gets you to a better place, financially, to buy 2 (or 4) new tires.

So what happens if it don't work? Your pecker ain't gonna fall of. You will get a flat. You shoud have TPMS to give you a heads up. Do y'all see the video of the guy getting a flat at 200 mph on the autobahn?

Plus, I think OP said it was a run flat. So, if repaired and fails, he isn't stranded. Hopefully he won't be doing 200mph though...

I've plugged many a tire in that same location. My father had a garage and I've work for both a tire store and gas station back in the day. You cannot put a patch there as others had stated. You can plug it with no issues but keep in mind, if you are hard on tires it will probably not hold. Seeing as you have 18K on the set, it sounds like you don't get on it too much. You are probably not too far from needing a new set anyway are you? Regardless, you have nothing to lose if you try a plug.

You guys are great! Thanks for all the ideas and input. I'll be replacing the tire or both that is. there was air bubbling around the nail and I like the idea of a patch but don't like the idea of wrecking or blowing out the tire. I do like to flog her a bit every so often and having that and dropping a valve on my mind will drive me crazy.
To those who said , what do you have to lose if I do a patch?
- my shorts if the tire gives out on a expressway on/off ramp, hopefully that's it
- and the car if I lose control
Thank you everyone who gave their opinions
