Default PSA: Dont let an 18 wheeler match your speed

I was cruising along to work this morning in the right lane with very light traffic. An 18 wheeler was cruising faster than I was in the left lane. When he caught up to me he matched my speed for about 5 seconds and then quickly juked into my lane and plowed into me. My car got stuck to him and somehow I was being drug down the highway but perpendicular to the road. Eventually my car let loose and I spun out into the grass. Then he burned off and left me stranded with a torn up car.

Ive got it at the body shop for an estimate for non-insured motorist since it was a hit and run. That I know about, every panel on the left side of the car is damaged. Both wheels and tires on the left are ruined and at least one of them has ruined bearings. The rear driver side wheel got the worst of it. My driver side door impinges on the body panel and barely opens. Windshield destroyed as is the side view mirror. Alignment is jacked obviously and my suspension feels like it is jacked up too. Brakes also felt very odd.

The PSA part is dont let them match your speed because clearly their tiny minds cannot remember there is a car there in the other lane. I will be amazed if this isnt a total. I am even more amazed that I did not get so much as a scratch on myself and luckily came out unscathed. This could have been really bad and Im really surprised i didnt roll somehow.

Its also possible he did it on purpose. There are plenty of psychos on the road these days. If caught he would just claim it was an accident.

I've had jealous people try to run me off the road in my car. Thankfully not 18 wheelers though.

This is my current thinking on it. There was empty road in front of me and him for at least a mile. There was also no debris or animals or anything of the sort for him to dodge. I never even passed him on the road and we were never in the same lane. I truly think he did it just to be an *******. Luckily i had 3 witnesses behind us that saw the whole thing and all agree he veered into me on purpose.

truly sorry that happened to you, but as motorcycle rider I would never leave myself open to that. Everyone should have a bike licence and truly understand the meaning of defensive driving and managing road space.

Good luck with the repair/replacement.

Damn! At least, you weren't hurt. It sounded like some kind of scene out of a Fast and Furious movie. Once again, glad you are OK. Maybe time to get a nice GS?

Thankfully you are ok. The car can be replaced or repaired but you can't. Maybe if repairable time for a wide body. Too bad you didn't get the trucks license plates

Yeah, I'm not sure what's gonna happen. I have lots of goodies on this too. England Green cam package, GMPP heads, Kooks LT headers, Corsa Extreme exhaust. Dynoed 493 hp last time it was hooked up. Definitely was a fun car.

I'm glad you're okay. The car can be repaired or replaced, sad and painful as that might be.

When I was a kid (oh, wait ... ), truck drivers were the good guys. The industry and the people who work in it have changed dramatically. I'm scared to think the trucker did it purposefully, but there is that chance.

I can remember being broke down on the side of I-5 in California about 15 years ago ... even then, only half of the trucks pulled into the fast lane when they passed us. Once upon a time, that was a courtesy.

Anytime I find myself on a lonely stretch of road with an 18 wheeler, I always think of the movie Duel, and stay the hell away from that truck.

Glad to hear you weren't hurt. Sorry about the car though.

Thank goodness you weren't hurt!

One of the first things I learned, in Driver Ed, was don't ever sit next to a big truck. One of the first things I taught my kids ( they didn't learn this in the "class") during the hours I spent in the right seat, beyond the "school" was this.

Don't sit behind them, because they kick up crap, and don't sit beside them because they really can't see you.

Again, glad you are OK.

Couldnt get any info off of him sadly. Its not like i stayed with the driver for a large length of time. He came up beside me for a few seconds, then just swung on over.
