Ours are DDs and get washed (me washing, not Mr.owc6 who has never ever washed one) at least once a week (except lately where we've had three weeks of rain), and never have the wheels been off the car except at a shop, and I'm thinking it might be rude to ask that they allow me to clean the barrels while my car is taking up space in a service bay.

That just may be me being polite to the others in the customer waiting room, though.

I do 100% of the work to my car. Right now I'm putting screens in the vent coves and am painting the calipers. So with the wheels off I clean the insides of the wheels and even tire shine the inside sidewalls. I do this when I do maintenance or something similiar to this. Other than that I just reach in between the spokes and wipe out what I can as far as it is visable. However it does'nt get driven in the rain unless I get caught in it unexpectedly. I drive other cars for different weather conditions.

When I do my yearly oil change, I take off the left wheel of course. Clean the wheel well really good and the tire and rim.

I continue and do the other three. I bought for $10 at Harbor Freight a 2'x2' flat dolly that I slide under the wheel and slide it out after I jack up the car and jack stand it...no more trying to lift that heavy wheel!

I cleaned the wheel barrels 4 years ago when I changed out my OEM brake pads for ceramic pads on my 2011 GS

This thread has helped to make me feel less like a slacker since I don't do it very often. I seriously assumed that most people did this at least annually.

I understand that on the 5 spoke rims it's a lot easier to get the barrels cleaned with a brush, but with some of the more busy rims (such as the ZR1, Z06 and 427 styles) it's nearly impossible to get into a lot of those tough spots.

Good feedback, guys

About every six months I remove all the wheels, and with the car on 4 jack stands, I do the following service:

Change the oil and filter if it's been a year (I no longer drive enough miles a year to do more than one oil change a year).

Measure the tread depth and inspect the tires.

Deep clean the wheels and throw a quick coat of wax on them (slows brake dust accumulation).

Inspect the brakes, and measure brake pad thickness.

Inspect the suspension and the underbody.

Every other year, drain about seven quarts from the auto tranny and refill it.

About every three years, change the differential fluid.

About every three years, drain about one gallon of coolant and refill with the same.

FWIW, I track tire tread depth and brake pad thickness, and trend when they are due for replacement, and lay in the new parts in advance of the need date. That way, things like brake pads are an easy fix.

Your exactly right, and that's why I am not going to waste my time pulling off the wheels just to clean the inside barrels.

Big pain in the **** (old Brit term) !

Nobody ever see's inside the wheels anyway !

I do this when I buy a used corvette. seems many folks just let the dust and crud build up. I pull, clean and wax. It makes a big difference in overall appearance.
There after I have no schedule to go through all that work again. I just try to keep em clean until I have to pull the wheel for other reasons.

I was meaning to say that they don't clean the crud as it accumulates of course.
I should have added that I remove and clean the wheels before selling also.
Besides appearance it says "This is a car well cared for" (or possibly never driven I suppose )

Not only clean the wheels, but all suspension and exhaust parts also. Every couple of months.
