What is that thing called...?
I am referring to the black, flexible plastic thing that mounts below the front bumper, and under the radiator. Its the first thing that you hear scraping if you enter a raised driveway etc. Mine needs replacing. Does anyone have a part number? I have a 2008 vette. Thanks, John

Not too sure it is vital. I had mine cut down and later removed because it kept scraping and never had any increase in engine temperatures. 163k miles

Never had personal experience, and not sure myself, but most posting about the air dam say cut it down but not to remove it....maybe your the lucky one....interesting..

They are an aerodynamic feature. AND they serve as an early warning for something more vital about to be demolished.
Just sayin'

I read on the original literature when the C6 came out in 2005 that those pieces were designed to scrape as an audible warning to let you know how close you were to something. It's out there somewhere.
Now in later years they have have had another function????

I have replaced the left and right side ones twice over the years due to them getting ragged from dragging on bumps. These are cheap. The center piece is of softer rubber and does not get as ragged in my experience, so I'm on my original.
I actually like the scraping as a warning, almost like a road clearance version of curb feelers, for those who remember those. Some places I drive (mine is a daily driver) have unavoidable bumps. The worst was my very steep driveway in Hawaii - there was no way to avoid scraping the heck out of them there.
Will the car do fine without them? If not at high speed or running hot, I'm sure it will.

I don't know about cooling, but I would think those air dams would create quite a bit of aero downforce. They'd have a pocket of low pressure behind them that would extend the entire bottom of the car (hence the "air dam" moniker)....then the diffuser at that back end stretching out that same air at the back would create even more downforce there.
Scraping is going to happen....I don't worry about it...at 90K miles with literally thousands of scrapes (only 2 5/8" clearance from the ground) my air dam is looking a little rough around the edges, but still seems to be fully functional.

As with so many other parts of the car, GM did no research and development on them so you can just remove them or modify them in any way you like. What does GM know anyway....

Thanks for the part numbers. Mine are badly scraped up because of our steep driveway approach. We are moving, and our new driveway is much, much better, so I thought I would spend a few bucks and replace it.
