Default How many hours to change a harmonic balancer

Does anyone know how long it takes an experienced mechanic to change a harmonic balancer on a 2007 Vette?

The book lists it as 7 hours, a post on the Forum lists it as 4 hours. Mine just went bad, got the dreaded squeak.

I just did one myself in 3 hours. A dealership is going to charge you the book time, so be prepared for a high bill.

It took my friend, who's an experienced mechanic, 2 hours.

Is it normal to have to do an alignment after the install?

Because they have to disconnect the steering rack, technically, 1/3 of an alignment is needed.

mine took 2.5 hours to complete. There is a trick if you have a lift, take off the 4 main bolts to the power steering rack, remove the rack from the steering shaft , take off the motor mounts and lift the engine with a floor jack while it's in the air, then removed both front wheels and disassemble the upper control arms, then you'll have room to manuwver the power steering unit so you can remove the balancer without having to pull out the rack. The hardest part was removing the balancer , it was a PITA however there was enough room to put in a small puller to pull out the old Balancer. Total cost was 553.00 at VIP and I watched them do the whole job from removal to reassembly in that time period. You do not need to remove the power steering unit all together. Labor was 407, plus they gave me a free alignment, and warrantied my rack for 3 years. Great deal. I literally watched them do the entire job. They made it look real easy.

Its not always about the OP. I'm doing mine in 2 weeks and his info was greatly useful to me.

I've done several of these. C5's are a little easier than the C6's. The C6's take longer because of brake lines on the drivers side where the rack has to come out. Also depends on options, Z51 cars have oil coolers and a larger power steering cooler where 1LT low option cars don't. The cooler lines and fin style P/S cooler on the Z51 cars slow you down a little but not too bad. Prepare to support the engine and lower the cradle at least 6 inches otherwise you're bending brake lines and you don't want to kink or break one of those. GM Dealer flat rate time once again depending on options is somewhere in the 6.5 hour range.

This 1LT red car took me about 6.5 hours.

This 3LT Z51 car took me about 7.5 hours. I have all the correct pullers and installers and air equipment and have been doing this a long time. Everything goes back where it's supposed to with no prybar damage. If somebody quotes you 2.5 hours to do this job, run away.
