If you think newer used car market values are out of touch, look at the classics!
When I bought my 2012 GS last March, I had been looking for a 1969 Stingray big block 427. I found a few that were in nice shape, but we are talking $50-75k! So I started thinking, do I want a 35 year old car with no a/c, am radio with two speakers, manual windows and locks, seats that are like lawn chairs with cushions, skinny tires, finicky vacuum operated headlights and windshield wiper door, etc.
Or do I want a 2 year old car still under factory warranty with keyless entry, HUD, navigation, power heated seats that are comfortable and actually hold you in place while cornering, am/fm stereo with cd player and 9 speakers, fuel injected and computerized, run flats with tire pressure sensors, huge brakes and tires, etc.
As cool as the old classics are, and they are rare in good condition, I just can't see paying as much or more for one than a new, or almost new car! Maybe if I was rich and a car collector. But I had to make a choice between the two. I chose modern technology and reliability.
Don't get me wrong, I would love to have an old big block classic, but not at those prices. And who's to say they won't outlaw old high emissions vehicles in the near future? Then the classics will be for looks only! They will sit in museums...Scary thought!

I just bought a 2010 for 36. Its a 3lt with 18k on it. I was looking for approx 2 months and saw prices all over the map. I love the dealers who have the bottom dollar price advertised and are trying to make 6k profit off the deal but the car has been sitting there for 3 months.

For every seat there is an *** waiting.

The idea is that they, The dealer, price it at 10-15K above retail. You then offer them 10-15k below retail. And then at some point, reality is come upon by meeting somewhere in the middle. The you, the customer, go away happy because you've whipped the dealer and got a great deal. Meanwhile the dealer is happy that you didn't beat him too badly.
Its similar to retail stores who send out flyers advertising a $200 item for $49.95. people rush to buy it because its the deal of a lifetime. Ina actuality, its the lie of a lifetime. But lying is the norm in sales. Besides, people don't like truth. JC Penny tried that a few years back with real life pricing everyday and doing away with silly unreasonable sales of 75 % off. They nearly went bankrupt because people like to be lied to. They like to feel like they got a great deal with the $200 item they bought for $49,95.
So dealers have learned the lesson which JC Penny showed them

The lifeline for dealers and most consumers is the ability to get cheap long-term financing for new and used cars, especially expensive ones.

Mal Berko's financial advice article today states car loans are as easy to get as home mortgages were a decade ago. Almost anyone with a voice & pulse can get financing for a car he says. Some lenders now offer car loans up to 8 years. All while the default rate for credit card debt is projected to be over $31 Billion this year and projected to be near $37 Bill next year. Americans are earning less than before the Great Recession while their debt is at record levels.

Bottom line, he says while auto sales (new and old) are sizzling and setting records, it won't last for long.

Classics are not out of touch. They are more out of reach for most.

Semantics to me, what is out of touch? What is out of reach? Is a 69 ZL1 worth 1 million? Can I afford 1 million, NO. I say supply and demand. The dodges that were going for 150k 3 or 4 years ago are going for half the amount now. Mecum-sp? is more realistic, BJ is crazy high in prices.

Its all relative.

Spot on!
I've never met the woman who doesn't think she's getting a great deal on a pair of shoes that's tagged for $89.99 and "ON SALE", for 60% OFF for only $36.00.
They never seem to realize that those shoes are only worth $36.00, and they'd have to be nuts to pay $89.99.

I just picked up a 2010 GS 1LT in JSB with 27K mi but not a scratch on it for $35K here in Dallas.

Its going to be a DD and after looking around for a long time to find the right JSB GS with an Auto I jumped on it.

That would be a very good number for south Florida.
Here, your car in excellent condition, with the same mileage, would bring around $47k.

It's amazing what gently used Grand Sports are selling for here.
The car I showed in post #4, I was told actually sold for $51,650.

The same car with 15,000 miles on the clock would go for about $47k, and with 25k miles would drop to about $43k.
Sales appear to be extremely mileage sensitive.
My local dealer recently offered me $48k in trade for my '13 GS 2LT with 6,200 miles. That means to me that he knows he can sell it for around $52~$53k.
The fact that I originally paid $56k for the car new, has no bearing on the resale.
What should effect the resale is the fact that low miles used 2014 C7 'vettes can be bought for around $53k~$56k.
So, I'm still at a loss to understand why the '10 to '13 GS around here is selling for these inflated prices.

I also want to clarify that I bought this from a dealer. I was looking for one from an individual seller but they were all overpriced. I found that dealers will lower the price after the car has set on their lot for a while. Be patient. The dealer I bought mine from was originally asking $48,995 Plus tax title and tags.

My C6 was from Texas, '12 2lt, 37.5K while everyone was in the high 40's.

Maybe that's why it's been sitting on the lot for something like 211 days... Sometimes I want to just send an email and say 'wtf IS WRONG WITH YOU?!!LOL. Check out cargurus. You can shop by year, miles, equipment, etc. and, it will show you if the car is a "great deal" "good deal" "fair deal" or "overpriced" compared to local market sales.

All about what people will pay. Just like selling modified cars. Some people won't pay anything for the mods. Others are willing to pay more than the car is worth for the mods.

With only 3,000 miles, in perfect condition with original tires, $50k to $52k around here.
Anything under 6k miles seems to be bringing unreasonable $.

Your same car with 15,000 miles, about $46k.
