Default Hood Liner question

I recently bought my 09' C6 until yesterday I never looked at the liner and now I just can't figure out what happened to it. The liner is damaged but clearly the motor shows no sign as to why.

Hoping someone can shed some light on this. It looks like it matches up to the fuel line, could it be getting that hot or is it just rubbing it I'm just not sure. If I were to replace it would it just happen again?

Hmm. Interesting. There's nothing around that area that would or should produce that kind of damage. The hood liners are rated for heat, but that looks like extensive heat damage or direct flame. I'm more apt to think it was caused after the hood liner would have been removed and happened away from the car. But why would it be removed?

Not quite sure. Maybe someone else can elaborate that has seen similar damage in the same area.

My first thought is someone hit it with a pressure washer while cleaning the engine bay.

Interesting thought, The engine is about as clean as it could be for 5 year old car it's amazing! It would surprise me it the dealer did it during prep for sale. I would have a major issue with replacing it if I know it won't just happen again.

If you're apprehensive about replacing it, try to find a similar piece of that material. Go to a junk/salvage yard and you'll probably be given one for free. Cut out a piece to fit in the damaged area and attach it. Drive the car for a period of time to see if the damage can be replicated. This should give you and idea if it's something more involved.

I do have a customer that owns a scrap yard I may give that a try if I can get him to save me a piece. They have no use for it I can't imagine it is recyclable.

I don't think it was eaten and there is no sign of anything else being eaten but the thought did cross my mind. There are no dropping anywhere everything is spotless except this damage.

Another guess is that the previous owner could have hung an old school drop light from the open hood. Those things could get pretty hot and maybe started a small fire.

Bingo I think you are right I used to install car phones back in the day and I did the same thing to a door panel I caught it fast enough and was able to trim it with a razor and you wouldn't know. But I think this makes the most sense mice would have left some other signs either eaten wires or droppings something else would tell that story. Tomorrow I will see if a drop light fits the bill. These days I use either florescent or led lights only.

I agree with the pressure washer idea. At any rate...take it back to the dealer and try to get him to replace it. You must have some kind of warranty on it.

Not a chance the dealer will take care of me on this one nor would I expect them to. I would be happy if they would deal with my convertible headliner but they said no to that. This one in on me I should have noticed this before I bought the car but I was blinded by desire

Some kind of rodent. They love to use material like that to build nests.

I think you will be OK to replace it. Nobody else has had this issue. Just go for it!

Someone could of left the expansion tank/oil cap on top of the engine for a while, with the hood closed obviously.

I think we have a winner! It looks like there was even a very small notch where I hung the light. So how much is a new liner going to cost me?
