You're welcome
Was glad to serve 8 years AD, 95B20/51M20.
Would do it again too, was a valuable life experience.

So why does it seem only veterans are working today.

Phunny you mention that -- before I retired -- I worked every Veterans day.. no holiday for us... but the schools got it off, Govt employees got it off, Banks got it off, and no mail. Thank God the Internet does not take it off.

Did anyone ever imagine that we would see a time when so many people would enthusiastically express their gratitude for your military service? I don't remember it being nearly this commendable when I joined the Army instead of going off to college; and nobody seemed too terribly impressed by my service while I was in. Coming from 3 prior generations of military service, I had the support of my family, but that was about it. After I was discharged, I'd get the occasional nod from fellow veterans, but people who never served seemed completely indifferent. I didn't accomplish anything noteworthy during my time on active duty; I never left CONUS, I never saw combat, and I had nothing but great experiences. I was lucky. In the past few years, there seems to have been a shift in our culture and military service is actually celebrated. I think 9/11 was a turning point of some sort for those who serve others in any capacity. It's awesome. I'm stunned by how many people have thanked me for my military service despite my assurances that I didn't do anything particularly heroic while on active duty. However, what I really appreciate is the outpourng of support for those who were heroic and did see combat. I can't express how moved I am when I see those veterans recognized for their contributions, supported in their time of need, and generally held in high regard by people who never served. It makes me feel real good about America despite all of our other shortcomings. It makes me proud.

As a service member during the Vietnam Conflict it is surprising and pleasing to see the shift the country's has taken toward its veterans. Back in the 70's veterans were not treated like they are today. Makes me proud I served.

9/11 was definitely the turning point. Before 9/11, and especially post Vietnam, civilians didn't have a clue

Very well said. I too had very little support from others except family. I served '68 to '72, 17th and 449th Bomb Wing. About five years ago the Police Chief of a small town, Germantown, Ohio, knew I had served and thanked me for my service. It was the first time anyone other than family that had expressed that to me. It caught me off guard as I thanked him and told him he was the first person outside family to thank me. Took 37 years, but I was grateful.

Thank you all.

25 Navy years in submarines during the Cold War and Vietnam was a memorable experience that I'm glad to have had the opportunity to be a part of. I hope our country wakes up and begins to realize once again that freedom isn't free and disarmament and weakness produces war.

I am very proud to see the Vietnam Vets finally getting the respect and admiration they deserve. Thank you for putting up with all the BS this country has given you over the years.
