Default How Much Oil

I recently bought a 2007 3LT with Nav Velocity Yellow convertible from a well know and high volume Chevy corvette dealership in Florida. The dealer had 3 2014 and 15 2015 unsold C7's on their lot.

The car was a one owner Florida car with 40,000 miles. The car is in pristine condition. I received the Car Fax, warranty and maintenance history on the car. The car had a great maintenance history and the previous owner had the oil changed every 6,000 miles.

This morning I checked the oil level after the car sat all night and checked it again 10 minutes after I drove it 20 miles. The oil level was the same both times. It was higher than the top of the cross hatch area. There are 3 little holes on the dip stick. One at the bottom of the cross hatch, one in the middle and one at the top of the cross hatch. If you were to add another little hole above the top of the cross hatch area, that is were my oil level is. How much oil do you think the dealer put in when they did the oil change? 6 quarts? 6.5 quarts? 7 quarts? More than 7 quarts?

Who really knows what happened at this point...................

In attempt to help put yourself at ease, my suggestion would be to simply start from scratch by going ahead with changing the oil and filter as soon as possible, add the correct amount of fresh high quality full synthetic engine oil based upon the capacity requirements as stated in your owners manual.

Best regards,

Ever think of asking the dealer to look it up?

That should be secondary.1st things first, get that oil down to where it's supposed to be.You don't want an overfilled car. 6 quarts z51 manual,5.5 for everything else except the z06.

I wouldn't worry about overfilling on any LSx engine, as they can handle a higher oil level than most engines. The owner's manuals even say it's safe to add an extra quart for racing purposes. I used to overfill my LS1 in my old C5 by one full quart at every oil change and I put 133,000 trouble free miles on that engine. There is a ton of leeway on these engines before the crank goes sloshing through the oil. No need to panic or remove any oil in this case, just solder on without any worries. I highly doubt the dealer put more than one extra quart in there, they probably just rounded it up to 6 quarts. 100% safe.

That's very true, but if memory serves, that's only for an automatic.

I would suggest those folks running a Z06, ZR1, or M6 Grand Sport, consult their owner's manual before adding an extra quart.

2007 Owners manual calls for 5.5 qt for the 6.0 L engine without Z51 and 6 qt for the 6.0 L Z51 equipped manual or auto. It maybe that the dealership simple put in the 6 qt. As mentioned check with the dealership, don't worry about a little extra oil. or drain the system and start from scratch.

The cross hatched area represents one quart so take it from there.

I would think you are oK with amount. do you do any racing? The extra will allow high speed turns without any low oil problems from to going to the outside & not being picked up.

UPDATE:
I was concerned on the amount of oil the dealer put in the car. This morning I went and bought 6 quarts of 5W30 Mobil 1 and an AC Delco PF48 oil filter from Walmart. Took the oil and filter to my local Pennzoil oil change business. I always take my cars there. I provide the oil and filter and they charge me $20.00 for the oil and filter change. Car doesn't go on a lift because you drive over a pit. And best thing I can watch everything standing in front of the car.

Had them put all 6 quarts in. Went for a 20 mile drive, pulled the car in the garage and let it sit for 10 minutes. Oil level is perfect, right at the top of the cross hatch area.

I estimate that the dealer put in 7 quarts of oil based on where the oil level was on the dip stick after I checked it for the first time yesterday. Had the car 6 days before I checked the oil level. Incompetent GM dealership employee who did the oil change. Who knows, maybe the dealership put in Dextos 1 semi synthetic instead of Mobil 1. Much cheaper and I'm sure that is what their bulk tanks are filled with.
