Default Should I spend the money?

After reading some of the horror stories of the LS7 cars having to be replaced, I called the local speed shop and asked what they would recommend. They basically told me that I need to replace the heads and the reasons behind it. Is it worth the $4000?

I'd hate to have the motor let go in my new to me 427 car.

Why replace the heads? Cheaper to machine them and replace valves, springs. IMO

I would steer clear from that shop if they are trying to make you replace your basically brand new heads. Just get them beefed up which will cost you under $1500.

What does that do to your warranty?

That's what I was thinking as well. Just wanted another opinion.

This may not be what you are talking about but here I go:

I would do a little more research. During our trip to NCM there was a master mechanic there and the subject came up about what caused damage to the heads. He said that it was a proven fact that the aftermarket products that increased air flow caused these problems. I wish I could explain better but it has to do with forcing more air into the machine. Someone who sat in on this Q&A might be better informed than me because I came in during the discussion.

Just drive it and fix it when the warranty is about to expire.

On second thought, there might not be anything to fix. Aren't the 2013's ok?

I left my mind reading apparatus at home today, so I need to guess you are concerned about the dropping of valves? If that is it, I agree with the person who advised waiting out the powertrain warranty.

No reason to do anything as long as the warranty is still in effect and GM is responsible for any problems. Remember that any problem is magnified on the forum...the vast majority of LS7 engines out there are running great. Make the decision in a few years...if you end up having the car that long.

You should have asked him to explain how this has happened to totally stock, unmodified cars...

But then you also have to buy new head bolts, new head gaskets, new oil/filter, coolant, spark plugs, etc and then there is that pesky charge that the shop wants you to pay for all that labor, in addition to the $1500 to have the heads "beefed up".

Yes by all means, just enjoy the car and let the warranty do its job. U will probably not have the problem as most don't.

The 2013's are having issues w/ the titanium rods. The coating was wearing off causing the rods to rub and disbursing some nice Ti dust into the oil which was killing the bearings.

I don't believe the dropped valves are as much as an issue as the 07-11 run.

Since your car is under warranty, run it until it cant go anymore than take it back to GM. FWIW, this forum will build up the paranoia, so stop reading and drive.

Sorry, but that is about the dumbest thing I've heard. Basically you're saying, just **** away the money because I have a nice car.

My fear is that the motor will grenade and then I have a non numbers matching motor, and the resale is gone as well. I don't plan on selling this car, but I've said that before about other cars as well.

So far, this is the best Corvette I've ever owned...it's a beast of a machine.

If it were me I would get the longest extended warranty (GMPP) I could get and not worry about it for another eight years or so. After that if it still bothered me and I was nervous about it, I would get the heads done.

This isn't the 60's. They make a lot of Corvettes now and they aren't getting slower . I know the 427 is a 25xx or so run, but with the c7 zo6 coming out with a convertible now, you might as well start lumping them together. I don't think you should lose sleep over a 1% possible motor melt down or non matching numbers. Drive that awesome Corvette!
