Default HUD Issues

So, over the weekend I installed a HUD in my 1LT 2007 Z51. I went with the dash removal procedure. The good news is that I got it taken apart and put back together and there are no squeaks or rattles! The bad news is that the HUD is not working.

Yesterday, when driving home and messing with it, I thought I saw a very faint picture of the horizontal tach when in some bright light. It went away and came back a couple times, faded and blurry, but never enough for me to think I'm definitely not crazy.

My guess is that one of the T taps isn't making a good connection. Any other ideas or input before I rip her back apart this weekend?

When I installed mine, I tested it while the cluster was still out and it was working fine but after I installed the cluster it was not working. Turns out that one of the connectors on the projector was not pushed in all the way.

I'm really crossing my fingers that that's the case. If the actual projector is broken, I have no idea what I'd do. I really don't want to take that dash apart again. Not sure if the cutting the ducting method would work for getting it out. I think it sounds reasonable since the picture was (may have been) fading in and out, but was never strong.

Haha that was actually my next course of action. I'm in Houston even. Wanted to see what the collective could come up with though. I'm really just hoping someone has had the same experience and I'm not dealing with a broken unit.

I've seen threads on this kind of thing and it usually is just a bad connection. At any rate, even if it is the projector, that is the easiest thing to replace since it's all one unit.In and out kind of swap. When mine was installed years back, and it was the first c6 that Steve Doten did, I had the issue of nothing happening at start up and it was in fact a loose connection.

Remove the cluster and you should be able to get your hand past the duct to check the connector that comes from the T-splice harness.

I'd looked through everything that popped up in here when searching "HUD" and hadn't read anything similar to what I experienced, but you guys are making me feel a little more confident that it is just a wiring issue!

Does anyone know that the minimum connections required to get picture are? I replaced the T-taps that came with the kit with ones made for smaller wires and I'm now getting a good connection on both my power and my ground (checked via multimeter).

Those push-type wire taps are junk! I'd never use those things.

I'm beginning to agree. I don't think the ones that came with the kit were even making a connection, and I was crimping down pretty hard. Using the smaller gauge taps is giving me a good connection on at least the power and ground.

So I started this thread in August, and after a few months and a few more tries when time allowed (getting married in May and it takes up a lot of time!) I finally did what I should have done in the beginning... I went and saw Andrew over at theDoubleAA.

Andrew is an awesome guy. He sorted through my nest of wires, found a short/fray from my multiple tapping, ripped it all out to be on the safe side, and then got it working good as new! I ended up just hanging around the shop for the rest of the afternoon and got to learn a few things. He does some impressive work and I'll definitely be using him for stuff in the future.

If you're going to install an HUD, do what I didn't do in the beginning, go see Andrew at theDoubleAA.
