Default MGW Short throw shifter installed today

Whew, if there is a way to mess up a simple install, I'll find it. Everything went smoothly until I connected the shift rod to the transmission linkage. I messed up when I attached the lower box WITH the alignment tool BEFORE locking down the shift rod to the linkage. Ended up stripping one of the OE bolts. I thought I had screwed up the clamp.

As I was riding to the dealership to inquire about the clamp,, I realized that the screw never made it to the clamp. It was being stripped by the shift rod!! I went back home, used one of the bolts that was used to attach the lower box to attach to the linkage, found a suitable steel bolt in the garage and used that to nail down the lower box and back in business!!!

Lesson learned, do not attach the lower box before attaching the shift rod to the linkage. Just like the video says!

Good news. Sounds like something I'd do.

For those of you that have this shifter. Do you find that the side to side motion of the shifter (if you move it) when in gear to be a lot more than original equipment?

I have had mine in now for just about two years and I don't recall any difference in the side to side motion, have you driven the car since the install

Yes I have, but less than ten miles today. I'm planning on breaking it in a bit more tomorrow.

Not whatsoever. The MGW unit is rock solid!

I just installed mine yesterday and am having quite a bit (1/2 inch) of movement side to side while in gear, did you ever find out what was causing yours?

Yes, go back into the area where the shifter attaches to the transmission linkage and really tighten it down. That will take care of the movement.

Just curious, what does it do different than the OEM shifter?

How fragile is the center console cover to remove? I have been a little scared to attack this project yet.... The car is so new I just didn't want to unsnap all the plastic stuff.... and take a chance on breaking any clips..... are the any vid tutorials for this? I hear the mgw is a pretty big improvement in shifter feel so I think I'm ready to take the plunge.....

It shortens the distance between gears, makes for much quicker and crisp shifting.

The removal process is very easy, just go to MGW's site, watch the videos, and take your time. I'm not the kind of guy to try to tackle something that is clearly outside my area of expertise, especially when it concerns my Vette. But after watching the video, and seeing how straight forward it is, I gave it a shot. It's easy. I don't think you will break anything as long as you don't use force in the removal and re-installing the pieces.

Trust me, this is is easy to do, you would be giving money away. I had never attempted anything like this. I watched the video on MGW's site several times, and even had my Ipad nearby in the garage when I made the switch to be sure I didn't overlook anything. The operation is as simple as can be. If you are know the difference between a screwdriver and a ratchet, you can do this. And if you should run into an issue, give MGW a call. George, the guy who did the video will answer any question you may have. Hourly rates will differ from shop to shop, and state to state.

Did you get the lower box too, or did you just get the shifter? And who did you purchase it from?

You're gonna want the lower box too because the stock one sucks. The only place that sells it is www.mgwltd.com. Great customer service too
