Mobil 1 Vs Dexos
Getting ready for my 1st oil change in a '13 base coupe. The owners manual and filler cap only mention Dexos for a change. What happened to Mobil 1? Is it better than Dexos? What about the warranty?

I had my car in for it's last free change at the Dealer and my 2008 got Mobil1. He told me that 2012 and up cars get Dexos and I asked him why that was.......he told me because Dexos is what GM is supporting. I always use Mobil1 and always will. Dexos is a specification not really a brand.

GM has been using their AC Delco Dexos1 at dealers and factory fill for many cars. I think it is unclear what the factory fill is, even though the caps changed to Dexos. Speculation is that the dry sump cars at least still get Mobil 1, as GM recommends that in the manuals.

Earlier C6s also had a "specification": it was called "GM4718M" and it was NOT on every oil, nor every full-synthetic oil. But it was on only full-synthetic oils.
Dexos is another "specification" from GM to oil companies for them to get their oils certified to meet GM's specs. Surprise! Part-synthetic oils can, and are DExos-certified oils for Corvettes.
I haven't done a thorough study yet ( and may never), but I do believe not all Dexos oils are GM4718M oils. Or, maybe it's the reverse (not all GM4718M oils are Dexos-certified). But the essential info is that you put in what is called for in your year of C6. My '08 is "GM4718M". Yours is Dexos.

If you like Mobil 1, go ahead and use it. It's an officially licensed dexos product. See the link for which Mobil 1 products are approved.

I've been using Mobil 1 for years. I know dexos is required on GM cars now so the oil change on say a Malibu that use to cost $30 now costs the customer $40-45.

Dexos is a specification and is spelled with a lowercase 'd'. Mobil 1 is dexos certified and is the factory fill. Mobil 1 and GM just signed a new contract, recently - no doubt there are still using Mobil 1.

use any brand oil that supports dexos. keep in mind, it calls for 6 qts. which is a little too much. i changed mine and used 5.5qts. which leveled it off to where it should be. pour the 5.5qts. and check it before you pour the rest in. also check out the fumoto oil plugs they make changing the oil so much easier.

I just got my Oil changed today at a lube work shop, and the guy came in and asked me if I wanted Mobil 1 or Dexos, I chose to go with the Dexos since my car is still under warranty till june of next year just in fear I didnt want the dealer to bitch that I didnt use the right oil in case something went wrong till then, I know it makes sense that M1 would be better, but dealers can screw you over the smallest thing not to cover you under warranty.

Anything on that list is fine for warranty purposes. I understand many Corvette owners won't put many of those thing in their cars, and that is fine from a personal choice and may be valid for longevity or high performance, I wouldn't use many on that list in my C6. But if your car calls for dexos, you can use anything on that list without powertrain warranty concerns.
AnglelDeath, I quoted you to help emphasize the point. I don't mean to direct this directly to you, this hopefully will help others understand the oil requiremets. It can be confusing when the shops steer you in the wrong direction.
