Default Loss of Low Beam Recall

After nearly 8months of me using my fogs to get around at night after my low beams went out, I just received a email from NHTSA stating that GM has recalled all the 2005-2007 corvettes that experienced the loss of low beams due to the underhood fuse box. Finally I get my low beams back

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2005-2007 Chevrolet Corvette vehicles manufactured March 29, 2004, through June 22, 2007. In the affected vehicles, the underhood bussed electrical center (UBEC) housing can expand and cause the headlamp low beam relay control circuit wire to bend. If the wire is repeatedly bent, it may fracture causing a loss of low beam headlamp illumination.

REMEDY:
GM will notify owners, and dealers will replace the UBEC housing unit, free of charge. The manufacturer has not yet provided a notification schedule. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020. GM's number for this recall is 13146. Note: Model year 2008-2013 Chevrolet Corvettes will be covered under customer satisfaction program number 14203 for the same issue.

Nope, still alive...

I'll replace my wire if needed but I'm not going to let someone replace the entire fuse box.

I agree. I have not taken my vette in to a dealer since I purchased it. Don't plan on starting now. I'll try and repair the wire myself. Don't trust dealers . Too many bad experiences.

I would just wait and see what GM comes up with to fix headlight issue before I would try and repair it myself ,if you don't do it correct you can turn the car into toast.Lot of voltage in the fuse box.

They're just going to replace the fuse box. And really, there's only about 14 volts in there. My reasoning is that unplugging and re-plugging all those connectors and relays and fuses is something that I will do more carefully than a guy who is getting paid 1.5 hours to do it. There are lots of instance here on the forum of relays burning up because the connection was iffy and caused arcing.

Zero,

if I knew they would take care of my car like I would, there would be no problem, but I know this will not happen. Some young punk get his hands on my car and gets paid by how many he can go through in a day, you think my car is special to him? No. Something is bound to go wrong. Happened too many times with other cars I've owned. I've had other cars that came back with new problems, scratches, greasy floor mats, etc. If this happened to my vette, I would probably have to spend the night in jail, because I would take it out on someone's a$$. Might as well leave it in my own garage and take my chances.

Just give me the new fuse box and I'll put it in.

If you've been driving around for 8 months without low beams, maybe you should get rid of the car ......

Voltage isn't what kills you anyway; current in the right place can kill you. With proper application a 1.5V AA battery can kill you. But a 12V car battery doesn't have enough voltage to get enough current through even wet skin. The only place on our cars where there is enough voltage to force enough current through wet skin to kill someone is inside the headlight enclosures.

I also don't believe in fixing something that isn't broken. A recall is good forever. From the Department of Transportation - http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/recalls/recallprocess.cfm
If a dealer refuses to repair your vehicle in accordance with the recall letter you received from the manufacturer, you should immediately notify the manufacturer. In most cases, contractual agreements between a manufacturer and its dealers require all dealers to honor the recall and remedy defects at no extra charge – regardless of where the vehicle or equipment was originally purchased.
If GM doesn't put a time limit in the letter the letter goes in the glove box. If my lights ever do go out I will get them fixed.
