Default bought the wrong car - tr6060-rattling question

well, after years of planning for a vette I finally pulled the trigger, on a 2014 gt500 . I figured let me get the shelby first since they're going away and get the vette in a year or two.

Turns out there's a really bad rattling noise in some of these that Ford thinks is normal. They say "Firing impluse pulsing through the drive train can be felt at the shifter". Mine rattles badly in 2nd and 4th at 2500 to 3000 rpm.

So trying to decide what to do (maybe trade in), it turns out the C6 has a tr6060 too. How many here have any ratting, in a stick shift, I guess. I'm looking at some leftover z06s.

I have experience no rattling like you mention.

A little notchy going into second especially when cold.

Is this a common complaint with the Shelby?

Surprised you didn't notice the problem with test drive.

I remember some but not many. I don't think it was a big issue.

Here's one person's remedy with a rattling Hurst shifter that may give you an idea:

Both the Shelby and the Vette may have the 6060 spec trans, but the linkages and shifter boxes are sure to be different, and that's where the rattle occurs, its not the trans. Drive a few Vettes, see what you think, I doubt you'll experience any rattle.

If you don't get a z06 or zr1 the ls3 came with the tr6060 not the ls2. Just so you know when looking.

General Motors uses Texaco ATF Type III 1863 fluid and is certified "fill-for-life," requiring no fluid changes.[1] Ford US lists a fill specification of 3.65 quarts of Mercon-V automatic transmission fluid.

There is speculation that the use of thicker manual transmission oil can reduce the characteristic rattle noise on idle and during low revolutions under load - however, the use of such fluids could make manufacturers refuse to honor a drivetrain warranty.

I had an '85 Dodge Daytona Turbo Z that rattled at idle. Turned out they all did it, really! It was caused by the 4-bangers inherently rough idle feeding vibration into the gearbox. Not sure this applies here but your situation sounds similar, no easy fix if the noise is actually coming from the gearbox and not the linkage.

Did you call ford and have a zone rep inspect the car? Try a different Dealer for service? Why not insist on them replacing the transmission?

The case is at regional service rep. Car was seen by a field service engineer from Ford, he sent it up to the plant vehicle team at dearborn. I don't think another dealer will override (and eat the cost). As for insisting on a fix... they say it isn't broken.

clunky linkage and a little too much vibration is "normal" in the Cobras.....rattling "noise" is not.....

is this under hard accel or just normal round town driving...or both....

See this thread and check to see if it is the same noise you are experiencing...the OP describes it as "rocks in a coffee can." I hear this on mine too and as far as I know it is normal but I'll let others decide that.

Here's the sound, it's a few mild accelerations in 4th gear, at 2500rpm to 3000rpm. In the last few seconds I hold the accelerator a bit longer and you can hear the rpm climb behind the tapping. It happens in 2nd too, same rpm. It's starting to happen in 3rd now also. I am really surprised anyone would call this expected behavior, especially when my friend's is super quiet.

btw, thanks everyone, much nicer folks here than at the mustang site

That isn't the noise that I hear with mine (or that I can image the OP was describing in the thread I posted before). Does the shifter rattle when you hear that? Sounds more like something vibrating rather than something internal. I've never even been in a mustang so I really can't help much so good luck.

Sometimes there is a linkage/rubber bushing on shifters that can cause rattle to transmit if it is improperly installed or if it is a performance version that is polyurethane instead of rubber.

Ford builds every bit as good a vehicle as Chevy.

FWIW I listened to your file and I had that noise with an early version of a Hurst aftermarket shifter in a 2009 dodge challenger (also a tr6060 manual). New bushing fixed it.

oh man, that's not good to hear, not the way I feel right now about Ford.

I'm thinking it's a bushing too. Just the slightest touch on the shifter makes the sound stop.

This link is to ONE video--->https://photos.app.goo.gl/E3XcyjQM34MUzyE9A

This other link is to a handful of videos in case anyone is curious enough to listen------> https://photos.app.goo.gl/5sHKyzA5oD8jmez46

I have a 2013 Grand Sport with 27,xxx miles. I've been daily driving it for over a year now. Around May 2023 it started making the noise you hear in the video above. It was subtle at first but now it pretty much does it through all gears. It doesn't seem to matter if I have the clutch pressed all the way in or just cruising, it does it in all gears. In person it's not as loud as it is in the video.

I've already tried an MGW shifter but there was no change. I bought a replacement OEM shifter and boots but still no change.

I have already taken it to a transmission shop, they test drove it and said the transmission shift perfectly and they don't think it's a transmission issue. They didn't charge to test drive but they said it would cost a lot to take everything apart down there to get a look.

I'm thinking torque tube bearing but it should stop when clutch pedal is pressed. A can of marbles sound.
