Default How do you remove the rim center caps?

I'm plastidipping my wheels this week and don't want to paint over the logo on the caps. No way I'm good enough to mask off that decal, but I can hand paint around it if it's off the wheel.

Anybody know how they come off?
Thanks,
Tom

What kind of rims? base C6 or GS? the GS just keep them on when you plasti dip them then you can take center caps off and with a razor just go along the groove of the logo and then peel off the plasti dip off the logo. Base C6 not sure which is easiest. But to get off the center caps off can take a thin knife or screw drive and pop them out or if you are taking the wheels off just pop them out when the wheel is off.

Easy answer: mask and trim later

Not so easy: remove the wheels and pop the caps off from the inside, then clean the barrels while you have the wheels off.

If you use a knife to pry the caps off, you could scratch or damage the edges of the caps -- like I did. Jeez!

I can just pull them off with fingers. If it's really necessary, a piece of plastic can pry them without damaging them.

Not a fan of prying them off any wheel. It's harder but much safer to remove the wheels and knock them out from the back side.

Is it possible to get dental floss behind the small opening?

Thanks for the help! It's the GS factory painted rims. I'll try the paint and scrape method and leave 'em on.

First time you might need something to pry with until you figure out how the clips work. After you know where to grip them they just pull off by putting your thumb down one lug hole and index finger down the adjacent hole and pull. Very easy once you figure it out. I take mine off several times a year during cleaning. You should ALWAYS pull them off BEFORE removing the wheel lugs to prevent the possibility of scratching them with the wrench.

I think the OP is talking about removing this style

Not this style?

One is usually popped out from behind with the wheel off and the other by hand or with a hooked tool.

Not sure exactly what rims you have, but on my stock '08 coupe, they just pop off with the help of a screw driver. They are held in place by friction. They should be easy to remove, then they snap into place when putting back on.

the easiest way without damaging is to use the suction cup from your GPS - I have done it and they come off in a second

In a prior post, one member suggested a Credit Card?

Plastic shouldn't scratch anything?

Just tried that and, nope. That would be a finish friendly tool but still too thick to get in that crevasse.

I have never tried it and it is a really tight fit but would interior removal tools with a thin tip (made of plastic or hard rubber) work?

Yes it's a lot easier than you think, you really don't need to take the center caps off period either, just take a model airplane exacto razor knife or something similar and follow the groove along the logo (after you plasti-dip them you'll see what I mean) then carefully use the point of the exacto razor knife and lightly scrape along one of the flag corners and you'll see the plasti-dip start to move until you can grab a small corner of it and lift up and pull it off. Shouldn't take long at all!

This wheel pic is a plasti-dipped wheel

Post up some pics when you are done!
