Sink hole...

I don't think it was "newsworthy" but in just watching them yesterday and today….you could see that a bunch of dirt came down from underneath the concrete on one side and they seemed to be "having a meeting" trying to determine how to approach it ( yes, I'm retired and have nothing else to do but watch!)

I hope the repairs are done by the time of the 20th Anniversary Caravan. Last # I heard there are 8000 Corvettes showing up!

It's going to take quite a while to finish the repairs. First, they have to make sure the remaining structure has a solid ground under it, figure out some way to fill the sink hole so they won't have a future problem and then repair the building. I doubt they will be close to finishing any time this year and maybe next year.

We're doing the Caravan so we're very interested to see where they'll be by then...

I believe their target date for the building repairs is this August. The sink holes are a common problem in that area and the engineering firms know how to deal with it.
Given the number of people that were there before the collapse and commented that the floor didn't feel right, they should have checked for problems before it sank. I believe they said there will be sensors in the new floor to monitor the earth below.

On the museum website there is a link to a good geologic discussion of the sinkhole and the issues involved ( and the uncertainties ). In it they say they "HOPE" to be able to retrieve the remaining 3 cars but they are starting to express some concern about that. Apparently there are visible "cavern like" areas moving off to the sides of the hole. And….they have found that approx 30% of the support underneath the spire is gone! I am beginning to think that this may not end nicely for the museum in that the dome structure above the hole may have to be demoed in order to fully assess the extent of this thing and determine what is going to be needed to fill it in and protect the remaining museum structure.

"In honor of jpee"
This is really a shame in the sense that I would have hoped (as we all would) that this hadn't happened. GRanted, sinkholes and acts of nature happen all the time, but I just have to wonder what kind of geotech was done prior to the building being built way back in the '90s. This is cavern-country, one of the largest in the country right underneath and nearby. I would guess there is not a simple solution for this one. Not an inexpensive one. And one can only hope there is a solution that isn't beyond reach.

If the three remaining Corvetts are in the open "pit" area they will be recovered unless they shift and slide into one of the other caves that is part of the cave system under the building.
One of the communications from NCM mentions the possibility of sealing off the area using some kind of non-flowing grout.
Nice to see them taking their time as it is better to move slowly to prevent another problem.

Does anyone know if the building damage/repairs will be covered by some kind of insurance? This will be very expensive.
My MIL lives in a sinkhole area of Florida, houses just 100' from her have had serious sinkhole problems/repairs, but the ground under her house has been mapped and is said to be ok. Most of this is covered by insurance, so far.

It would be cool to have some kind of glass floor and lighting so people can see the hole and the remaining Vettes. I'd leave the other damaged Vettes on display as they are. For better or worse, this disaster is part of the museum's history now.

Am I seeing right? Are they "vacuuming" all the loose dirt out of the sinkhole?
Also, where are the links to the "geological" discussions on the museum website. I found one description of how sinkholes happen in general, but nothing in depth about this one.
