Burning Brakes
I found a bunch of springs, nuts and metal pieces under my 40 year old recliner that I bought for $5.00 and it still works just fine. However, I'm not driving it down the road at 80mph.

Pretty sure it's the clutch return spring. I would replace it if it were me, they put one on there for a reason.

Clutch spring. Many leave it out, many replace with the lighter C5 spring.

Clutch pedal return spring. Many run without it, some replace with the C5 spring, others return to stock. If you were happy with the stock feel, buy a new spring, install it, and call it good

Let me add one more: it's the clutch return spring!! Out of my three Z cars with over 100k accumulated miles, only the 01Z suffered this broken spring. The need for this spring has been discussed several times over the years and I seem to recall that GM's position is that it is needed to return the pedal to its full and upright position.
