Default 2005 Weak Differential

I keep reading about the 2005 having a weak differential. Our car is stock with a six speed. At what power level does the differential start giving up the ghost? I don't know anyone personally who has had a problem.

My 05 is at nearly 134k and I have my original differential. I believe this issue has more to do with hard accelerations like burnouts and racing. From I have read, the crack/break occurs from the stress or torque caused on hard acceleration. I have not heard of anyone having the break because they just casual drive.

Mine was replaced under warranty, not because it broke, but because it was noisy. The new one is just as noisy and always has been. I have somewhere between 125,0000 and 150,000 (not sure exactly w/o looking through the paperwork) on it. Knock-wood, it's just fine.

Stock .... you'll probably never have a problem.

But....

When you see a 2005 differential case next to a 2006+ differential case (see pic below).

The problem usually was evident when drag racing…yes the diffs would crack etc. I do not drag race (street or organized) and have a Lingenfelter set up and have had NO problems. My C6 is a 2005 and still running strong with no problems

Wheel hop during a hard launch is what usually causes trouble. I dont think A4 has problems but M6 you have to be careful ot the track.

I've been "slightly" above stock hp since the car was new and for years I hoped as long as I had traction limited tires I'd be ok. Never once had wheel hop but one day under spirited excelleration I cut the diff in half. I can only assume a slight crack may have occurred before the carnage actually happened. Main shaft and one exhaust can destroyed. My guess is a majority would never have a problem.

Are 2005 differentials all by themselves or are they the same as c5 differentials?

2005 differentials are weak, the c5 differentials are good.

Drag racing is 'breaking parts'. That will happen on any car. Saw an '08' blow the rear wide open and parts went everywhere.

Some call it driveline shudder but I dare say you will find it is wheel hop as with the old Chevelles of the day. A friend broke his 12 bolt rear end from excessive wheel hop. That is one sturdy piece but the violent action does violent things. I'm not on the drag strip so doubt that I will have any problem and have yet to encounter drive line shudder or wheel hop. I was just wondering about problems guys might have on the street. Thanks for the responses.

Says the guy right before the diff explodes and takes out the trans mainshaft. Then he thinks " if I would have only replaced the diff I wouldn't now have to tear the trans down too!"

Sorry I was talking to the OP. If I were you, I would worry.

You first have to drive like an azzhat for that to happen or track it.
