It turns out that the intra-car communication systems in the C6 were different from almost everything else in the GM lineup, a couple of years into production. So the newer/nicer nav systems could not be used in the C6.
That left GM with the choice of spending huge money to redesign the C6 electrical system, or spending huge money developing a newer/nicer nav that used the existing electrical system, or just leaving it alone. They did not believe the customers would pay the money to cover the cost of changes, so they had to leave it alone.
We've had two C6's with factory nav, totaling 7 years/105,000 miles through 30 states. We also have two non-GM cars with different nav systems, two Garmins, and four cellphone navs. We have spent many thousands of miles in convoy with other cars who were using Garmins, TomToms, Magellans, etc.
All of these systems are usable, none are perfect. Each has their own set of advantages and disadvantages. The C6 system is not intuitive to use, but for the way we use the car, we prefer it over any of the others we've used or seen.

Jessica, I Started This Post My Vin Is 1G1YG3DWXC5104249. And I Find It Hard To Believe That A With All The Technology That Is Built Into A 2012 Corvette That My Nav System Can Not Communicate With OnStar. It Would Be Cheaper To Do Away With Both And Buy A TOMTOM For $100.00 That Has Free Upgrades. By The Way I Use It In My Cadillac
Sorry for any inconvenience, your vehicle is only capable for Turn-by-Turn directions with voice prompts providing directions. Let me know if you have any additional questions, I'm always happy to help!

My Fiancee's Hyundai Genesis Coupe will do what you describe, she can even find a destination on the computer or iphone and send it to her cars Nav system.

No it's the same as if you are using onstar, voice prompts only. I go to MapQuest, find my route, go to the send part, click my car then it directs you to the onstar page where you can give your route a name. When you get in your car, push the talk button, Say "virtual adviser" it will ask you the name of the route and the voice prompts will begin. Google maps used to work also but then they dropped the send to my car option so you cant use it for that purpose or Onstar dropped them, one of the two. BTW you can store up to five destinations or routes at a time.

Yes you could but you will hear two different voices going at roughly the same time ( onstar voice, nav voice ) and you will get two different routes sometimes. No it will not hurt but it can be very confusing having two different guidance systems going at the same time.
