Default Harmonic Balancer question

My 05 C6 just hit 10k on the odometer. I have read some previous threads from some of the forum members indicating that their harmonic balancer acted up & needed replacing. Is it really a $1000 job at the dealer? Also, how many miles were on your C6 when it went bad. ? Is this a common problem? And lastly are their any tell-tale signs to indicate there is a problem or potential one brewing? Seems like a hefty price for a repair job like this one. I hear a "chirp" sound on mine on start-up but it usually goes away. Should I be concerned?

Yes that's the price and I have had this issue with my 06 at 21k miles. Plenty of threads on this issue. A real shame as the problem started with the c5 and they carried it over to the c6 without correcting the issue.

If your VIN is less than 11039 get it done for sure! It was fairly common early on and they changed to the diamond embedded washer (DEW) after 11039. Less common later on, but still not a rare happening. I'm thinking mine cost $6-800, but that was a bunch of summers ago.

Had mine replaced on a 2011 Coupe at 4 months and 4K miles. Sounded like canaries under the hood. Once replaced it was fine when I traded it almost two years later with 24K.

Replace the serpentine belt while you're down there.

OEM balancer from production line fails in 4K. OEM balancer from dealer inventory still working quietly at 24K . . . Go figure.

Problems are not just with the ls2 they are with the ls1-3. Balancer starts to wobble and slowly come part. If that happens when your driving well than you could be in for much more than jus the balancer being replaced.

I hear the chirping once in a while on cold start. It stops after 30 seconds to one minute of idling.
The question is: how does one determine at which point the balancer replacement is warranted?
Hearing the tweety bird for a few seconds on a cold start doesn't bother me that bad, but is it a sign that the integrity of my crankshaft is at risk?...... Or are we in the "better safe than sorry" territory here?

Just look at it with the car at idle. If its bad you'll see it wobbling.

Thanks.
Haven't noticed any wobbling so far, I'll keep an eye on it.

You have a garage queen. Since you don't drive the car there is nothing to worry about. The chirp you hear is most likely due to the age of belts and lack of use etc. Don't be surprised to be hit with other age/lack of use related issues on that beast even though there are few miles on it. The clock on mine just turned 170K. Daily driver... vacation twice a day for me as a result. Still looks an runs great. Got a return on my investment as a result

Get over it, if you can't afford to fix it then sell it.

So, I assume the 11039 is the last five of the VIN?

sounds like a possible loose a/c belt. also could be a bearing on alt., p/s pump, or belt tensioner. a quick listen with a mechanics stethoscope will pinpoint where the chirp is coming from

ROFL. Never a negative comment? lol. For the most part it is a great forum, but there are a few who are protected by the anonymity. I know of one that if he was anywhere near me, within 200 miles, lol, I'd go kick his beer gut freekin ***.

As someone else mentioned, this harmonic problem started with the C5's and GM never fixed the issue and it continues with all the C6 models except for the ZR1.

Yes its at least a $1000 job, a job you will not want to tackle yourself unless you are a very experienced mechanic. The symptoms, belt squeeking/chirping. Some replace the belt and it goes away for a month or two and comes back. Of course if the pulley is wobbling get the job done. Its disgusting that gm has never fixed it, hopefully with the new models and different engine this problem will be over.
