Default targa top

I need to have my targa top repainted but the paint shop wants to charge me $417 to take it apart paint it and put it back together. Does anyone know how hard it is to take the skin off of the top and are there any instructions on how to do it anywhere?

It doesnt come off. The only thing that can come off is the weather strips on each side and the latches. The weather strips are held on with 4 or 5 screws each and taking them off should be all thats needed to paint it.

Too much to just remove the weatherstripping, but seems reasonable for a paint job. Thought you meant that was just taking apart and putting the top back together, which would be quite high if it's as simple as it appears to be, and the paint job would be on top of that. Sounds reasonable for the entire job though, to me.

I had a rear bumper repaired and painted (it was cut by someone in the Home Depot parking lot) and it cost about $600. And that was over 10 years ago.

$417 isn't bad when you consider the price of materials, which aren't cheap, and labor. My guess is it's probably half of each for that price.

The paint is $150 - 200 sold in quarts ( need 2 - 3 oz for the job) + 30 minutes prep + mark up = $417

Figure how much do you make a day VS the cost .

I had mine painted in the late fall at a Honda shop my buddy works for here in central CT. Brand new body shop with state of the art everything. They painted the top and the edges and taped the bottom side off, as far as I know they didn't remove anything. Monterey Red's the color on my "06" coupe. It came out perfect and a dead match color wise. As I recall I paid around $325 so your price with removing parts doesn't seem far off. You can always remove the weather stripping and latches yourself and save a buck. It's quite easy. Heli-Vette is right , it's only a 2-3 ounce job. Body shops don't buy quarts they mix them themselves on-site. That's how they get the perfect color match. Good luck.

$417 for a top notch paintjob alone is not a bad price. Given the labor cost and everything else included, I really don't think thats a bad offer at all if they are a very highly reputable paint shop.

Fix it yourself for about $50 with some black or carbon vinyl wrap.

In NJ that would be a good deal if it's a quality re-paint.

I took the top into my Cadillac dealer in San Antonio TX for it to be painted. We have had all of our repairs done there and they are great, total cost $420.

Just had a red top repainted Inferno Orange, plus had a very small crack repaired.

$495 in Tacoma, WA

Your price is right in line.

I paid about $300 in 2009 to have one painted by a body shop that charged me cost on labor (they were one of my customers). Seems your quote is in the ballpark. Then again I had my entire rear clip removed and painted for $500
