Royal Purple vs Mobil 1

Royal Purple vs Mobil 1
I have a friend of mine who thinks that Royal Purple oil hangs the moon. I currently use Mobil 1 and have had no problems in the 3 C6's I have owned. I would appreciate any comments on this subject for a car that is driven in a non racing environment. Thanks.

If you choose either one of those oils, and change your oil according to your oil life monitor, your engine will easily last 200,000 miles or more, so go with whichever one is cheaper and easier to find (and that will most likely be Mobil 1) In fact, any 5w30 synthetic oil that meets the dexos specifications will get the job done.

5qts of Mobil 1 at wally world is only $25, hard to beat that, and it will protect your engine as good as anything out there.

Whoever uses RP swears by it and its suppose to be far superior oil but if you change your oil frequently you will be fine with either brand. I use both of them. I buy them on sale at walmart

Considering how the Corvette team found fit to fill all Corvettes from base to ZR's with Mobil1 from the factory, I really don't think you can go wrong with it.
It's funny though...In the 15+ years that I've jumped over 10 different forums including Mazda, Ford, Nissan, Subaru and Chevy vehicles, I couldn't count the number of times ive heard this discussion. It's an age-old one that will never die. Just go with what you want or feel. You will always get mixed results.

Castrol Syntec here....Use it in my show car's trailer's tow truck. Nary a problem.
As for Synthetic oils, like Ford, Chevrolet or Chrysler...which is better? It all depends on who bought what...all of them are good!

But I never get tired of talking about oil!
As a new C-6 owner, I just changed the oil with Mobil-1. Walmart, cheap as hell. I changed the Manual trans and rear diff fluids to Redline.
After deciding all that I had some discussion with an Amsoil dealer who is a member of this forum; got a case of their "lower" line OEM sythetic motor oil for our two drivers (Subarus), also changed out the manual trans fluid in my WRX with the Amsoil gear.
Any brand name synthetic changed at a proper interval with a good filter will keep our engines going a very long time. After finding a pal here who deals Amsoil (and Wix filters) and reading about their products, that's my move from now on- Amsoil.
My 2 cents.

I found Mobil 1 to be fine to use on both my previous slightly modded Corvettes, and never had a problem. But on my Z06 my engine builder highly recommended I use royal purple. Since all they do is modify Z's and race cars along with decades of engine building experience, RP it is for me.

I've used Royal Purple for almost 20 years in all my vehicles except the C2 and i consider it a special oil. I don't use it in the antique because it doesn't get driven often, <50 miles per year, so I use Castrol GTX in it.
Unfortunately, the special additives in RP like Synerlec are gone for the Dexos version and the non-Dexos type (HPS) might cause warranty problems if GM decides to lab-test the oil in a warranty settlement (not likely). My dealer told me they saw that happen in one case where there was catastrophic engine damage (not oil related) that was otherwise warrantable. They said the warranty in that case was not honored because non-Dexos oil was used, but I would imagine there would be legal issues rising from that decision if the damage wasn't caused by the oil, and I would imagine the chances of having an experience like this would be very remote. My preference would be to use RP HPS 5w30, but siding with caution I've decided to just go with Mobil 1 EP for this car, as it is cheap and readily available at Wal-Mart. I have no doubts the engine will be fine with it, as it would be with any Dexos-rated synthetic.
I'm at 1500 miles now with my second oil change with the dealer-installed (free) Dexos blend, which I'll use until about 3000 when I'll change to Mobil 1, or RP if I change my mind.

You'd probably never know the difference between the two in everyday driving.
The recommendation by the manufacturer is marketing. It does meet their specs though.

Being on in age I can't change my own oil anymore and rely on lube shops to get it done. Unfortunately they all seem to use a bulk feed system that doesn't allow you to verify what is being put in your vehicle. Do these places cheat on what you get when your paying for premium oil?
