Default Need One Good Tire Answer

Need your help. I have read all the posts about tires , but I need advise from someone who has, "Been there, done that". I bought a new left over 2011 GS, A6, with 25 miles on it. Goodyear RF came on the car. I have 4500 miles on the car and the tires are already worn halfway.

I don't race or drive hard. I will be getting the street alignment next week. My question is. What tire will give me the most mileage, it can be a RF or non RF. I'm just wanting a high mileage tire.

Thanks for your help.

I went with the Bridgestone RE050A run flats on my Z06(same tires as on the GS). Night and day difference. The Bridgesones start out with 10/32" tread depth whereas the Goodyears start out at 8/32". I have close to 13,000 miles on the Bridgestones and have now just worn them down to 8/32".

This post will probably go on and on but I went with the Michelin Super Sport for my GS. Night and day difference between the old GY RF's and the on-RF SS's. Quieter, better in the rain that we get here in the NW (yes I drive in the rain and the windshield wipers do work), much better cold weather traction, and they come with a 300 treadwear as opposed to the 220 of most of the other choices.

I have just read all the reviews and pondered back and forth about RunFlats / NonRunFlats for my 2010 GS . In the end , I just ordered Michelin Pilot Super Sports , to be put on next week and I can't . freakin'. wait .

The original Goodyears were SHOT on my '10 GS at around 9,200 miles. They aren't available in the GS size anymore (????) but I put on a set of General Exclaims (non-runflat) and the difference in ride and noise was dramatic. I think a lot has to do with the tire being a non-runflat. So far I have about 22K miles on the Generals and I'm very happy -they still look relatively new with not so much tread wear - I haven't measured it... When the time comes for another set of tires I'll have to research everything.

Keep in mind that treadwear can only be compared to tires manufactured by the same manufacturer. A 220 Goodyear is not comparable to a 220 Bridgestone. But a Bridgestone with a 300 treadwear should last twice as long as a Bridgestone with a 150 rating

Also remember the Goodyear's only come with 8/32nds of tread where most other brands have 10/32nds or more....

1 year, 7500 miles and your tires and alignment should be covered. Not sure when you bought the left over '11 but you may want to look at that. I have an '11 coupe with GY and have 13k miles on mine with still about 50% rubber and they don't get burned out but I do drive in a "spirited" manner.

Seriously noob question...how do you measure your tire tread depth? I tried to buy a tire tread depth gauge but none of the local parts stores have them in stock. Is there another way or should I just take it to a tire store and see if they can measure it for me?

Thanks!

Here's my real-world experience: 2011 GS.....original tires were shot at 17K miles...which sounds higher than most on here...and I certainly didn't baby them (well...I did for the first 2k miles while I learned how to drive the car).

I did have an awful pull to the right after about 2 weeks of ownership, so I went for a wheel alignment from a local shop that came highly recommended. Car has tracked straight and true since.

At 17K miles, I put on some Michelin PS ZP's (run-flats)....I'm now at just over 38K miles, so I've got about 20K miles on the Michelins and they are holding up just fine. No need for replacement for a while that I can see. And I definitely do not baby these tires. I don't spin them, but I push them hard all the time (street hard, not track hard).

That's my experience. YMMV!

Go to hardware store, Home Depot, Lowes, or ace hardware and buy a dial caliper....it can measure inside and outside dimensions as well as the end has a pin that you can use to measure depth.

An auto parts store should have a tire tread depth gauge...a NAPA store can have one for you the next morning if they don't have it in stock. You can also get one from Amazon like this one for about $5:

Thanks to everyone for their advise. Sounds like Michelin Pilot Sports appears to be the tire of choice. l will also check with the dealer for warranty on the alignment and new front tires (I bought the car 4 months ago) the car pulled to the right some when I first got it and I was told to let everything settle in before doing an alignment????.

Again thanks for the help...

I bought Super Sports for my 11GS Vert. I had 5k miles on them when I traded it in for my 60th this week. Part of the deal was that I get my Michelins so they were put on Tuesday.

GS has supercar tires -- you're lucky to get 15k miles.

A coupe (non-Z51) has longer-laster non-supercar tires (IDK the exact tire spec).

I believe the "factory" alignment specs are all the same -- at least Pfadt doesn't make any model-specific recommendations:
http://www.pfadtracing.com/blog/wp-c...-alignment.pdf

But you can see that recommended specs depend on your intended use & desire for long tire life.

BTW, based on posts I've read (and my own experience), the alignment direct-from-the-factory can be way off.
