Default Battery tender question

My deltran battery tender has the red light on and the green light is flashing at the same time. I have never noticed this before.

Anybody know what's going on?

Did you unplug it then plug it back in after a minute? did you read the directions that came with it?

Maybe you should read up on it?

here is your owners manual....

STATUS INDICATOR LIGHTS:
The following describes the
indicator light operation:
<
NEITHER LIGHT TURNS ON (AMBER OR GREEN)
– This is an
abnormal condition and most likely indicates that the charger is not
properly connected to the AC power.
<
AMBER LIGHT FLASHING
– The amber light flashing indicates that the
battery charger has AC power available and that the microprocessor is
functioning properly. If the amber light
continues to flash, then either the
battery voltage is too low (less than 3 volts) or the output alligator clips or
accessory ring terminals are not connected correctly.
<
AMBER LIGHT ON STEADY
– Whenever the amber light is on steady, a
battery is connected properly and the charger is charging the battery. The
amber light will remain on until the charger completes the charging stage.
<
GREEN LIGHT FLASHING
- When the green light is flashing, and the
amber light is on, the battery is greater than 80% charged and may be
removed from the charger and used if necessary. However, this is not a
good idea for deep cycle batteries. Whenever
possible, leave the battery
on charge until the green light is solid.
<
GREEN LIGHT ON STEADY
- When the green light stops flashing and
burns steady, the charge is complete.
<
ALTERNATING AMBER & GREEN LIGHTS FLASHING
– This is
abnormal and most likely indicates that the battery is sulfated.

It will do this until it is fully charged. No problem.

This is my 3rd Deltran tender and I have not seen this behavior in any of the others. What I am seeing is not on the unit instructions or in the link to the manual you provided. Generally what I have seen in the past is
Red when it is in full charge mode.
Flashing green when it hits 80%
Solid green when it goes into maintenance mode.

I am seeing solid red and flashing green at the same time.
I don't see that described on the unit itself and do not see that condition in the manual. Or, I just missed it.

Hi.

My CTEK battery charger will do this if the connection to the battery is weak. Make sure the postive & negative contact points are snug, and that there is no corrossion on the battery.

This may not apply to your battery tender - on the CTEK there is a 2 prong connector joining the alligator clips to the unit itself. Initially, I had the same problem as you becasuse one of the prongs on the connector was loose.

My guess is your tender is not seeing a proper 12 volt sigal from your battery.

Hope this helps.

I have said this on a few battery tender threads….Deltran battery tenders are good at maintaining a good battery but once sulfation sets in there is no way to recover using a Deltran product.

The one function that Deltran is missing is a desulfation function. It is one of the main reasons I switched over to BatteryMinder. I used the Deltran Battery tender for years but I found that at a certain point in the battery’s life, the battery tender would no longer to into “float” mode. Sulfation had built up and when it was too much, the battery would no longer take a full charge. And with no desulfation function, the Deltran just kept trying to charge and charge and charge. Once I switched over to a tender that does have a desulfation function (like the BatteryMinder or CTEK models) everything was fine.

I also have the Corvette tender (which is just a rebranded CTEK) and I have seen the same as Mike Green9 when I had the negative on a bad ground. Even though I was connecting it to the recommended “jump start” location. I am now using a cigarette lighter plug.

Are you connected directly to the battery? If not, you might want to give that a try to rule out a bad ground location.

If the Red Light is ON Steady AND the GREEN Light is Flashing, the battery is almost completely charged.

I currently have and use 6 Battery Tenders and what you are seeing is Normal. I've used them since 1997.

Give it some more time and when you return you will see a solid GREEN light.

P.S. What Don-Vette stated above is on the back of the unit. Although amber isn't correct, it should state RED.

GREEN LIGHT FLASHING
- When the green light is flashing, and the
amber light is on,
the battery is greater than 80% charged and may be
removed from the charger and used if necessary. However, this is not a
good idea for deep cycle batteries. Whenever
possible, leave the battery
on charge until the green light is solid.

As I pointed out to you in the instructions,YOU SAID...."red light is on and the green light is flashing"

And the instructions tell you this.....

QUOTE:

"When the green light is flashing, and
the red light is on, the battery is greater than 80% charged and
may be removed from the charger and used if necessary.
Whenever possible, leave the battery on charge until the green light is solid"

De-sulfation function ??? At the risk of having the worms crawling all over..... Just how does a battery charger "De-sulfate" a battery ?

I don't know the ins and outs of how it works but maybe this will help.

Sulfur builds up on the lead plates. To "desulfate" a lead acid battery, you have to drive the battery voltage to 15.5 - 16.0 volts at very low current for several hours. You need to keep the battery topped up and monitor temps, and can only do this a few times on a battery because eventually the lead won't shed the sulphur any more. You also need lots of ventilation and specialized equipment due to the high voltages involved and strict current regulation and certainly don't want to do this with the battery installed in the vehicle. Some of the new battery chargers claim to be able to desulphate a battery, and they probably do to some extent, but not to the level described.

I must apologize. Did not see the comment in the manual about solid red and flashing green. I see solid amber and flashing green but nothing about red. Oh well, I think I understand things now. Thanks for all your help.
