Hmm! Do I need a radar detector??
We're going to Florida next week. However, My niece is on her way to MD from TN now and just got a ticket on I-81 for 8mph over the limit. Shes driving a dark grey Acura RSX. Nothing flashy at all. I drive that road fairly often and usually take 10mph over driving a Toyota Avalon.
OK, so I'm wondering if the states are getting so strapped for $$$ that they are ticketing for 8mph over now. And if they do that to typical nondescript cars, what will they do for a bright yellow Corvette taking 10 mph over? And since the throttle feels so good and the power quite alluring, can he keep it to 10 mph over.
So, should I give Valentine a call tomorrow. Is there much of a learning curve with the Valentine 1? (FWIW, I'm thinking Valentine because it will be used on open road mostly)

I have three V1s, once I set them to the mode I want them in they just get turned on and off. I don't think there is anything out there I would rather have currently. Be sure to tell them you want to be on the wait list for return/refurb if they don't have any of these in stock, the longest I have had to wait is a week and it's at my house. This will net you a like new detector for ~$359, I honestly could not tell a difference between the first one I paid full price for and the two return/refurb units I purchased later.

I 35 N to Ok they will stop you for 4 over.
Usually drive 10 over with my V1 and have never had a ticket.

Real simple solution - drive the "legal" _cheat_ 5 over...
I just got back from a 4,788 mile trip with zero problems driving 5 mph over the speed limit. I saw highway patrol, sheriff's cars, police cars, constables, etc.
Since so many speed limits these days are 75, many others 80, and in one case (SH-130 in Texas) 85... just how fast do you want to drive on a public highway?
My average speed for the entire 4,788 miles was 70.02 mph...
I have more than 600,000 miles in Corvettes in 23 years and have received two tickets. Once was by a photo camera, the other I did not slow down fast enough for a construction zone.
I just don't see the need for a radar detector...

I vote for the Escort 9500ix. I have been properly warned many times in the city and highway. It uses GPS to get radar/stop light camera's location and also will learn and stop false alarms. I got the blend mount with mirror tap and couldn't be happier.

Yes, a V1 will save you thousands over time.
And I call BS for anyone driving nearly 5,000 miles running a mere 5 over the speed limit that claim they averaged 70+ for the entire trip. I have a lot of experience driving, and riding a Hayabusa, faster than the speed limits and to average 70+ I would have to drive a lot faster than a mere 5 over the various speed limits I come across.

radar
Just keep in mind when you hear the beep on the radar detector it is too late unless you have a rookie cop who is pulling the trigger all the time. 8 over, wow, I know we will drop speeds to 6 over so drivers don't get any points, and I always tell them NOT to tell people they were cited for 6 over, that they were given a break. There are also cops out there that will not cut any breaks when they see a radar detector.

It is never going to save you from LASAR...
But yes, You should have a detector just to keep you alerted to there being a possibility of there being a money grabber.
It is not about safety any longer.
