rear hatch struts. typical GM quality.
i feel like as soon as my warranty ended the rear hatch struts said goodbye. and i only have 10k miles on the car. seems so typical of this line. i remember back in highschool all the firebirds and camaros with struts that never worked. anyone else experience this and any recommendations for replacement.

Don't remember the names but I know there are quality aftermarket replacements. I drove my 92 Camaro to work yesterday and noted that the rear hatch struts were still strong.

just replaced mine yesterday -- an 05 so they lasted a long time.
Got them from GMPartsHouse. -- note they are called "lift cylinders" on the website. Very Easy to replace.

GM quality is on par with the other manufactors. I had a 97 Z-28 for 6years and 84K, it was a DD, no issues with hoos or hatch struts. My 03 vette was 10 year old and 52K and no issues with eiither ones.

The struts on my '91 Caprice wagon were fine until about 2 years ago when I put some Dow Corning silicone lube on the rods and they suddenly lost all pressure.

I am not sure I can agree with that...
I have owned a lot of really good low maintance cars.
I have only owned two GM cars in 30 years and they have been quite the repair shop queens.
2010 Buick LaCrosse CXS and 2007 Corvette Base.
On that note the five Dodge's have had much worse and I never plan to ever buy another Dodge product where as, I may buy another Vette Base...
But Chevy compared to any of my Nissan/Datsuns there is no comparison.
Nissan has always been a solid platform and I can get 200K out without many issues.
The best car I have had was a 2003 Volvo S60 NA.
Zero issues in 160K miles. I would still be driving it, if it had not went off a mountain after hitting black ice.
What a ride. That car saved my life.
I would buy another, if I could find one in perfect shape.

I too had an old GM car with no issues on the struts. Both the hood and hatch struts on my 1999 z28 were in perfect condition when I sold it last month. I put 146,000 miles on that car in the 12 years I owned it. It was a daily driver.

137,000 miles on C6. Replaced hood struts at 120,000 miles and hatch struts are still good. GM wanted $90 for hood struts. Paid half at parts store. Look exactly the same.

The hood and hatch struts in my '98 Z28 were still going strong when I sold the car. 168000 miles and 11 years old.
I did have to replace the hood struts on the Vette, GM parts, $42 each.

GM quality sucks and yet here they are ... driving a GM
My struts, BTW, are 6 years old and still going strong and get used everyday.
Some reading material for those that would prefer to drive other makes or thinks GM sucks
http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2012-0...ins-lexus.html
"GM’s Chevy Malibu was the top ranked mid-size car, beating out the Ford Fusion and Honda Accord, which tied for second. The GMC Sierra and Chevy Silverado were the top two full-size pickups, while the Cadillac SRX ranked third among mid-sized premium SUVs.
The Cadillac Escalade, which won the large premium SUV category, was the third best vehicle in the study, behind the Lexus LS and the Porsche 911, Sargent said.
“We’ve moved well ahead of the other domestic brands,” Bob Ottolini, GM’s executive director of global quality strategy, said today in an interview. “We really don’t want this disclaimer that says you’re better than the domestics. You really want to be looking at what it takes to be in the top.” "

I don't think GM is the worst or the best. It maybe the best per dollar. You forgot to mention that the Z06 was in the top 1 or 2 for best high performance sport cars.
On the other hand, when I hear GM's quality is the best I see some over jealous GM groupie that's blind to the real world. I think most of the adverse comments were the result of unwarranted and blind loyalty.
