Using Hockey Pucks for Jacking the Car ? I am

goop
I understand you guys thinking they might come loose but the product I use, GOOP, WILL NOT FAIL.
if you are putting something on that you know you are gonna take off, you would use a dime sized amount of GOOP like on the hockey puck. If like me you leave them on forever, last car they were on for 8 years and I live in Florida, you use a halfdollar size.
Even with the larger amount the GOOP remains flexible and with the help of a screwdriver you can get the puck to release, the GOOP pulls off like a rubbery, stretchy stuff and no residue left behind.
If you use the right amount I will personally guarantee to replace the puck if it comes off on its own. Thats how much faith and experience I have with GOOP.
The number of things and the variety of surfaces I have used it on in the last 10 years is in the hundreds. Like I said last car 8 years.
PS:GOOP is sold at home depot, loews, kmart, etc. It comes in like 6 different color packages, electrical, plumbing, wood, glass, etc. Its the same formula in every tube. Its clear aand possibly over a 5 year period it might yellow but you arent gonna see it do thats moot but I just want you to know what to expect.
I dont work for or receive any compensation, although if they wanted to send me a tube, it costs about $6 for a large toothpaste size tube.

Wayne O,
I can only speak for myself, but its pretty easy to get in a hurry and forget to tell the guy you have the pucks. Also it prevents me from leaving them at the tire shop, (just another thing to forget).
I dont trust myself to remember and if I forget and the guy cracks the composite, thats gonna be a pretty expensive lesson.
At my age, I have found its best to "goof proof" certain things, experience vs intelligence.
Also you cant see them unless you get on your hands and knees.
And using GOOP, I know that they will be there for years unless I remove them. Out of sight and out of mind.

Yes, the rubber pucks grab the jack better than the metal ones. I got mine many years ago on the auction site that shall not be mentioned here unless they are paying for advertising. Four with eyebolts came with a nylon bag for less than $20 delivered.

I use the BMW Jack Pads. They fit perfectly and hold tight. You could drive with them on but I don't. I pop one in before I jack the car. I got all 4 for about $40. Part number is 51711960752 google search the part number.

Explain to your insurance company why a hockey puck came off your car and smashed the window of a Mercedes behind you.
Just tell them you bought some goop **** at K-mart and its all good.

Dont have to worry about it. Last ones were still on after 8 years. Maybe if your an idiot and you dont use GOOP or the right amount of GOOP, something crazy could happen.

If I were in that situation and HAD to do that I would tell them it was lying in the road and I ran over it sending it into the Mercedes behind me.

that would make too much sense
Lordofwar,
You are right those look like the perfect design to use BUT for GM to integrate them into the cars pkg would have made WAY TOO much sense. They never fixed the 7 year old C5 "column lock" issue or any number of $2.00 fixes. They would rather pay the tow bill than fix the problem.
Considering the damage that can be done by a distracted tire changer not paying attention, I cringe when I think of the poor owner who gets a look under his car a few weeks later and sees a $1,000 worth of damage.
Something I forgot to ask readers is:
Do you open your doors slightly when you jack up the car ? or Is it mandatory to have the targa roof panel inserted when jacking up the car ?
I have heard different opinions and variables for doing this. I remember some talk about cracking some body panels if you didnt open the doors, or if the targa panel was out, (these may just be old wives tales but I thought I would see what the consensus is).

Steve, what you have heard was true in the c3 and earlier corvettes with the ladder type frame. With the newer perimeter frames especially the hydroformed ones there is no need to do that anymore as the frame has mucn less flex. I have actually tried to get both wheels off the ground jacking from just the front puck and it can easily be done. I don't do that normally but just wanted to see if there would be any movement in body panels. Btw others have said it wasn't even necessary in the earlier Corvettes either but I can't vouch for that.

I don't like the hockey puck pads and this is why. To install and secure the hockey puck you have to turn the puck so the eye bolt makes an interference fit in the hole. The holding window is very small. The bolt slips and the hockey puck drops out. In a pinch yea it works but to expect them to stay on the car while driving even if you goop them. Jack the car once and the goop breaks then the puck drops 5 min down the road. I prey I am not behind you that day. Hockey puck falling off the car and you better hope no one is behind you. Better solution is to get the BMW pads and stick them in the trunk. All 4 BMW pads weigh what 1 hockey puck weighs. If the BMW pad falls off they won't do any damage to people behind you as they are so light weight. This is my .02
