I use the "momentem" method, you can easily learn just how much swing is required for "window open" or "window closed".
If there is a pressure relief vent in the hatch, it doesn't work very well. On both our 2006 and now 2006 (coupes), it makes a huge difference if a window or door is open.

Our 2006 had the hatch closing handle and the 2009 does not. At first I was annoyed, but discovered that hooking my finger in the loop of the latch works just fine. If the handle magically appared in our 2009, I wouldn't bother to use it.

I kind of just figured this out to after I first got my car. Works a HELL of a lot easier with the window cracked or door craked to let the force of the air out. I don't even have to really push my hatch down...I pull it down to a certain point and then let it drop, almost like you would closing the hood and it shuts firmly every time.

Yes, but it still a lot easier doing it with the window open or cracked

Coupes have the close/lock assist, but the convertibles do not. (at least on the GS verts) Lower the hatch gently, and then give it slight push downward; it does the rest. I love it.

Your correct, it only operates automatically on the C6, the Z06 does not have the auto pull down. Probably for weight savings.

If you watch the video that was included in your "new car manual" when demonstrating how to remove, and store the top the company expert SLAMS it down!
....I would never do that.

I've had an 05, 07 and now a 12. I've closed them all the same way.

I always leave the driver door slightly open. I grab the hatch by the hinge and lower the hatch to about 8" above the closed position. I then hold the hatch from underneath on both sides and just let it drop.

It drops almost all the way down but stops and then the hatch pull down grabs it and closes it all the way. It works every time.

If I try to do this with the doors and windows fully closed its hit or miss

I pull mine down to about 10-12 inches, whereupon it closes itself. The last quarter-inch is the auto latching mechanism.

Does the vert's have this pull down motor? If so, mine has never engaged.

With my doors closed and windows up, I have to pretty much slam it shut and have been doing that for years.

If I just let it go from a few inches, it just ends up resting on the latch and the motor does not pull it down. If I let it go higher up, it just floats down like a parachute and ends up resting on the latch and the motor does not pull it down. Even with the hatch resting on the latch, I have to push down firmly before the hatch goes down more and the motor catches to pull it down. Doing it this way feels like I am going to break something and sometimes it doesn't latch all the way and the alarm goes off.

With a door or window open, I just have to let it go from a few inches and it closes and the motor pulls it shut.

I never force it down hard--don't want to risk cracking the bodywork around it.

I was told NOT to slam the hatch by a salesperson. I was told to lower it until it sits on the latch and then push down until the motor activates, about 1". Works every time with my 08.

I believe mine has a handle on it. I just flip it downward and let it close. But watch out that you don't get your fingers bent backwards!!

I lower mine until it nearly engages the mechanism, then make a fist and apply my knuckles to the hatch and press it down into place. No finger prints, and I think it puts less stress on the entire system.
