Default Black Z06 detail (in progress)

Just picked up a used '09 Z06 a few weeks ago. Started detailing it over the past few days, doing a little at a time. Will update this thread as I progress.

The car is clean for the mileage, but of course black shows everything. And it appears that some type of paint overspray (tiny specks) are visible on both sides of the car on the lower door area. Possibly from a road striping project. My main goal is to remove all the overspray and remove 90%-95% of the small scratches (marring) in the paint. Will use a glaze as a final step to try to hide the scratches not removed by polishing.

This was the last detail I did on my '07: http://forums.corvetteforum.com/c6-z...intensive.html

Tools used on the '09:

Halogen lighting that shows all imperfections
Clay bar
Porter Cable 7424
PO85RD 3.02 (polish) [was having issues with the Meguiars M105 so I changed to Menzerna]
Menzerna 106FF (polish)
Lake country orange pad (stage 1 polish)
Meguiar's yellow pad (stage 2 polish)
Chemical Guys 50/50 (wax)
Poorboy's Black Hole (glaze)

The car:

Some before pics:

Some small marring that I will be removing:

The overspray on passenger side door:

Clay bar removed all the paint dots. Applied masking tape and now ready for polishing:

Passenger door 50/50 shot after 1 pass of M105, and 1 pass of 106FF (polished on left side, right side untouched). Camera is picking up some lint from the microfiber. Will be getting some new microfiber towels as the ones I am using are not doing the job.

More to come....

Nice job. That black paint was definitely needing it.

It looks ok from a few feet away, but under the right lighting you can definitely see it needs work.

Checked your other thread- great work. I use the same set up except I went over the 105 with 205 for a finer polish both with orange pads. Have you tried blackfire sealant? Its f'n amazing on black.

Was thinking about using 105/205 on my car this coming spring, but was scared the 105 might be too harsh. My car has scratches/swirls that look very similar to exactly whats on this car.

Will definitely keep tuned to this thread to see how it turns out!

As a LSP on black I like Blackfire Wet Diamond, topped with Blackfire Mid-Night Sun.

That's what I'm talking about. I got a small sample of the Wet Diamond from Auto geek and can't believe how easy it is to work with and the gloss is killer.

Do you charge by the hour or the car because I could use your nice work come spring time?

I always apply my glaze prior to the wax. But then again I am using different products. You do nice work no matter what steps you use. As we all know, black is not a hobby, it is a career.

Looking forward to the finished product.

So I ended up having issues with the 105. It was dusting, leaving a residue, etc. Maybe it's just my technique, but I was losing patience so I switched it up. I am more experienced with the Menzerna SIP, so I went that route instead.

I used Blackfire in the past and I really liked it.

Ha, not really! I don't have much time to take in other jobs. I have more patience when it is my car I am detailing

You are correct. The glaze I use can be applied before or after wax, but I am going to apply before in this case. Yes, it is a career!!

Drivers and passenger fender, door, and quarter panel are done. I went with Menzerna PO83Q (SIP), followed by PO106. It was a lot easier to work with than the 105. There are still some small fine scratches, but the marring is removed and the hologens can't pick it up. I will have to get it outside in the sun tomorrow to check the work.

RF fender before:

RF fender after:

RF fender 50/50 (had to adjust camera settings to pick up the difference):

Waiting on the wax to do its thing. Time for a beverage:

Passenger side door. Some small scratches can be seen:

Finished product (lint from microfiber is visible):

looks good, all that work you did ,you really should use a sealer between your polish and wax. What part of Orlando are you in. WAIT A MINUTE, I bought the killer bee from you at Waterford lakes
