Default Nav unit and updating POI's

Hi All, I saw in spoiled996's thread on his car that he had a friend update his stock NAV unit with POI's to show red light cameras and such. Does anyone know how to do this? Thanks.

I was not aware that this could be done. You can add a few POI's, one at a time, to show the camera locations or something similar. But it would be a rather time consuming process to get the locations, enter them, and keep getting updated as new cameras appear.

If there is a good way to do this with the factory Nav, I'm all ears and so are many others.

Can you post a link to the thread?

Interesting thought, but I'm in the habit of stopping for red lights, so I guess I don't really care where the cameras are. Drive safe.

Without a doubt, the best database for RLCs is in the Escort 9500ix. It not only lets you know as you're approaching one, you can easily keep it updated by linking the 9500ix to a PC with a USB cable and downloading the latest from Escort's subscription service.

There are also a couple of units made under the Cheetah name that have a good RLC/SC database, might be the same source as Escort. But the Cheetahs are stand alone units that only do camera notifications. Best to pair them with a good RD, I prefer the arrows on a V1 but others may think differently.

No, not special, but I'm just a bit confused why anyone would need to know the locations of red light cams unless they intended on running red lights? I'm no saint as far as driving goes, but I can almost understand the locations of speed traps or speed cams, but running red lights is just plain stupid. Just sayin....

Not related to stop LIGHT cameras but stop SIGN cameras which are also on these navigation map updates, they are not clear always on where to stop. They removed a camera recently because the stop line on the road was 20 feet back from where the turn actually started and if you didnt stop behind the line, you would get a ticket in the mail. UNfortunately if you stopped at the line, you were too far away from the turn to see oncoming traffic to make your turn safely. The turn was on a curve so they didnt know where to paint a stop line on the road. So in this case, no one looked at the safety aspect until a few accidents occured and then the camera was removed. A reactive response instead of a proactive approach that could get people killed for nothing but money, revenue. money rules all.

I'm highly suspect that the OEM NAV unit could not be 'updated' for POI's by some type of non-OEM file/non-OEM update, unless you cracked the NAV code.

The way I read it, he was not talking about the GM NAV unit but rather a Kenwood aftermarket unit. If I were you, I would PM him directly.

Some of the "laws" are most definitely used as an advantage to gain revenue. I guess it works to be vague and unclear, those money makers ya know.

I actually look forward to a red light. As I approach an intersection I'm hoping I will see yellow and have the chance to stop. Leaving as the first in line is a lot more fun than being the last to cruise through. Now if they had a camera and law against 60' times ...

Actually what is stupid is your moronic thinking that someone wants to know how to upload POI info to the NAV unit with the intention of running red lights. Don't be an idiot and assume that is what I wanted to know the information for. As even you mentioned, the locations of speed traps or speed cams can also be used.

I know the feeling, and of course they do have laws, in MN its called unreasonable acceleration, I believe in Texas it is called excessive acceleration. So basically if it is fun there will be a law against it: sorry

Well, you specifically brought up red light cameras in your original post. It is logical to wonder why someone needs to know that. And, he didn't call you stupid, he called the act of running red light stupid. Don't take it so personally, it was a legitimate question.

With the stock NAV unit, all data is on the DVD disc...none is held in the head unit. You would have to alter the disc to have any effect on POIs.
