Default Tis the Season...for loose axle nuts!

What the heck, I have not heard of this problem until recently. In the last two weeks I've read more threads here on this topic than in all my time on CF. Must be climate change

My 2008 with 23K miles developed a knock sound in the rear when I would load or unload the drive train at parking lot speeds. I took it to the dealer and guess what the cause was? They tightened and torqued the loose axle nuts and the problem went away. All is covered with GMPP. They did not follow the TSB repair but did order some new ones just in case the problem returns.

These nuts are one time use, no? Sounds like the dealer was lazy here. Go get the new ones put on.

We talked about it and decided to try tightening and see how it holds and putting new ones on if they loosen up again.

Lazy dealer as mentioned.

I would have it done right.

The bulletin specifies Loctite 272, and that is hard to find. I had to special order a bottle from a distributor.

GM is supposed to have a part number for the same stuff, but I expect most dealers don't have that sitting around either. Shelf life isn't forever, either.

I somewhat suspect that my original bulletin job got loose because they used some other red Loctite, but not 272. Or didn't clean the thread/nuts. Or moved the car before it cured. Or...
