Default My vette almost caught fire!!... I Find the cause!

For a month I'm trying to solve a burning smell in my vette.
Today I found the cause!..

Those little yellow blocks are hot as hell!!!
Some plastic is already burned away as you can see..

What are these things?... And why are they so hot?

Picture is taken on the passenger side, under the floor mats

They look like resistors pulling to many watts for something aftermarket to me.

I'm guessing a resistor to after market light / blinkers lighting . High load or grounded / shorted which should pop a fuse .
Normally that stuff is low current .

I'm inclined to agree, The half-hazard way in which those are there screams aftermarket.

OP, are you the original owner of the car?

Those look aftermarket to me and if they are big resistors for blinkers or taillights, under the carpet is the wrong place for them. They should be located where the heat can be dissipated.

For comparison here's a 2013 fuse block....

It could be for almost anything. Speaker system that was removed, or still in place, alarm system, hard mount radar electronics, although with the size of those resisters lighting would certainly seem to fit better.

Anyway, you may want to take the car to a professional and have it diagnosed. I know I wouldn't trust myself to start gutting random pieces of wiring without messing something up.

Can you trace out both sides to see where they end?

What electronics do you have that are not stock? Maybe follow the wires and see where they go. If one end is connected to fuse block, disconnect and see what stops working. I would leave disconnected, if you have not already, until solved. The other end may be disconnected or just cut off from som old uninstall of something, causing to short out.

Wow that could have been bad. Something somewhere is not stock. Good thing you found this or it could have been much much worse. No take it to a dealer or any mechanic and have it wired back up to factory specs asap. Once that is done im sure something wont work that will probably be the aftermarket part

The wires of the both transistors are going to this harnass directly!!
And there are some still some wire trash into the harnass attached :S

What should be the reason why they are connected to "nothing" ? ...
Whats the purpose of putting them into a harnas directly ?

In the last picture you also see 2 wires that are not stock and splitted... someone knows why?

Thinking..
Maybe everyting comes together.

The vette is adjusted in germany for the germany laws, the flasher in the taillight must be adjusted for the law.
It needs to be orange and blink on 1 taillight.

Should it be possible that the previous owner placed this, and it has something to do with the rear blinking lights?

Another puzzle piece!!

pin 1 shows me some volts on the voltmeter when I press the brake!

The burning smell was only noticeble when I was driving slowly!..
So the transistor became only hot when I press the brake!

The question is still left,
why does someone place this transistors into the harness for the brake lights ?

I'll take a guess at it. Is it possible that one of the owners (probably the first one) imported this car from another country that doesn't have Germany's laws? Then, they had to have it converted to the lighting laws and did/had it done very badly.

Edit: I see HDRider just came to the same conclusion above.
