Onstar & Blutooth
I think it contains antennae for both the Onstar and the Blutooth functions.
Mine fell off the windshield 3 times on my 10 vert. Decided I didn't need either so I disconnected the antennae and removed the box, bracket and the sticky pad on the windshield. Threw the box into the trunk.

With the box removed, our Nav and Bluetooth and everything else work normally. But since the box contains the Onstar antenna, it can no longer communicate with the mother ship.
When I briefly tried pulling the Onstar fuse with the w/s box still in place, it seemed that everything associated with the microphone (bluetooth, nav voice commands, etc) quit. But I didn't experiment enough to be sure.

The black box on the windshield is not the OnStar module (VCIM) The VCIM (Vehicle Communication Interface Module), depending on year model and body style, is located in coupes either under the passenger side floor board above the fuse block, under the passenger seat, or in the rear compartment beneath the carpet just in front of the passenger side storage cubby in a recess in the floor. In convertibles, behind the waterfall. The black box mounted to the windshield contains the vehicle's cell phone antenna and the OnStar navigation antenna.

If you mean XM satellite radio, it was the "wart" in 2005 and after that was split into two (I think) antennas located in the outside mirror housings.
If you mean GPS satellite, I'm not sure. But hidden somewhere.

If you have the OEM Nav, it's antenna is mounted just to the left and above the center console HVAC duct/outlet.
The XM Tuner module is mounted under the waterfall in all Verts. The VCIM, is in the trunk/passenger cubby area, at least on an '06.
XM antennas are in the mirrors on '06 and newer cars. One is for the Sat and the other is for the ground based repeaters. '05's had a roof/trunk wart for XM.
AM/FM antennas are in the rear bumper area.
The box on the windshield has the OnStar's cell phone and GPS antennas inside.
