DIY: Painted Fuel Rail Covers
I installed a ported intake manifold this weekend, so since I had my FRC's off, I figured I might as well paint them. Just wanted to encourage all you guys out there if you are on the fence of painting them yourself. Instead of paying $200+ for painted ones, you can do it yourself for $10 and a few hours of your time. I used high temp black engine enamel spray paint for 2 coats of primer. Then I picked the closest color I found to LMB in a Rustoleum spray can. I used 5 coats of base and then used 2 coats of clear to top it off. I waited approximately 30 minutes in between coats. It was easy for me because I was swapping intake manifolds for the first time, so I was in the garage for half the day anyway!

Question....
did or do you remove the fuel line to install the covers? I bought some new paited covers and am afraid to scratch them with the fuel line.. it was hard to remove and reinstall the plain blcak one ... now Im afraid to scratch or ruin the new painted one.. but have not looked at if i can remove the line or not?
can anyone help me out?

Thanks for all the compliments guys. To answer some of the questions posted above...
I do plan on putting some black inserts for the letters since I have everything blacked out on my car. I think it will give it a nice accent.
And yes you need a special tool for the fuel line disconnect. You will need the 3/8" size. Initially I purchased this metal one from Autozone for $7.99 http://www.autozone.com/autozone/acc...ntifier=246367. It sucked...do not buy this one! It bent and one of the tips broke off and it was useless. I then went to Pep Boys and purchased a blue colored plastic one for $4.99. Go figure, the cheaper plastic did the job in less than a second! It's very easy to use. The plastic tool looks like the one pictured in step #8 in the following instructions. http://www.peakspeedshop.com/RemovalSteps.php. And here is a step by step to remove the FRC's. The metal tool pictured in these instructions is the one that failed on me. http://www.theredlion.us/C6%20FRC%20...uel%20Line.pdf

Did mine the same way 4 years ago and they still look the same. Only things I could add are that you should take them off the engine right after driving the car so that they are warm and flexible like noodles...especially if this is a winter project. Also, I painted the letters and then just used a paper towel and paint thinner to remove the excess paint around the edges...worked great...same technique as used on the rear bumper letters.

I searched online and found the lettering kit in the range of $50-$60 which I think is kind of expensive. Where did you guys buy your kits and how much? I think I may end up hand painting them in.
