2012 Coupe 1st to 4th gear
I have a 2012 Coupe manual tranny. Its got this feature where If I'm driving and the Temp. of the oil or tranny gets to a certain point it will only allow me to shift from 1st to 4th. (A little light will light up on the dash and tell me to shift into 4th).
Ok so how does or will the car know if I want to "get on it" at a green light and I want to use second/third gears?
Anybody with more info. on this subject would be great!

One-to-Four Shift Light
(Manual Transmission)
When this light comes on,
you can only shift from
FIRST (1) to FOURTH (4)
instead of FIRST (1) to
SECOND (2).
You must complete the shift into FOURTH (4) to turn
off this feature. This helps you get the best possible
fuel economy.
After shifting to FOURTH (4), you may downshift to a
lower gear if you prefer.
Notice: Forcing the shift lever into any gear except
FOURTH (4) when the 1 TO 4 SHIFT light comes
on may damage the transmission. Shift only from
FIRST (1) to FOURTH (4) when the light comes on.
This light will come on when:
• The engine coolant temperature is higher than
169°F (76°C),
• you are going 15 to 19 mph (24 to 31 km/h) and
• you are 21 percent throttle or less.

Most of the time (after the car warms up which doesnt take long) these two will be the reasons for the 1st to 4th indicator. To eliminate this, I just shift when my rpms are above 2500 and the indicator goes out and can shift into 2nd.

It's called computer aided gear selection (CAGS). There should be some information about it in your owner's manual. There are products sold by the companies that sell parts for vettes, such as Mid-America Motorworks, that will disable the cags so you can shift normally. I put a little plug in my transmission that I bought from one of the vendors. It's worked fine for 5 years.

Burning Brakes
In my 2009 I can shift out of 1st, then hesitate and shift directly into 2nd. Don't have to go to 4th.
If you don't want to do this then accelerate to about 17 mph and you can shift directly to 2nd.

It's a definite PITA... Install a CAGS disconnect and forget it. Here's a link to the one I installed

The skip-shift feature is annoying when it employs but in what I consider to be 'normal' driving it should rarely, if ever, engage. As mentioned, there's a simple CAGS eliminator you can buy and install to disable the feature and, you can also disable the skip-shift feature via tuning. The skip-shift feature is a PITA but I vaguely recall it helped spare Corvette for the government's several thousand dollar "gas-guzzler' tax. A simple solution to avoid it is to not drive like a fuddy-duddy. I'm not saying you bump the rev-limiter with each shift but there's no need to lug your car through the gears...just shifting in a moderate RPM range will avoid the skip-shift feature from engaging. There are different styles of driving to be sure but the concept of self-inflicted skip-shifting is totally alien to me. IMO if you regularly skip gears you'd probably be happier driving an automatic transmission.
