Default late downshift on automatic 2010 GS

As I don't get to drive this car as much as my wife,I drove us to dinner last night and played a little. From about 45-50 slowing to a stoplight it seemed to downshift pretty hard back down to first and almost after we got stopped. The wife said .....
It always does that..anybody else notice the same thing or just me being paranoid?
If your in it hard before a stop it does it worse .
I don't use the paddle shifters because I cannot get used to the delay downshift is fine but trying to hard shift ²nd thru 5th is almost as slow as using D123.

The car only goes down to second gear in D or S mode. You need to use the paddles if you want first gear at a stop. That said, my 2010 GS shifts smooth like butter.

BZZZZZTTTT! WRONG. If you don't use the paddles it always goes to first in either D or S. If you are using the paddles then you have to be in S and it only goes to second. Listen to the engine. Watch the tach. Count the upshift bumps. It ALWAYS goes to first if you aren't using the paddles.

Now back to the OP's question, yes, the downshifts are harder as you go slower. 6th to 5th is almost unnoticeable but 3rd to 2nd can seem rather harsh if you are totally off the gas. My '07 feels like it doesn't disengage the torque converter lock when downshifting at the lower gears. Second to first, however, is usually a lot smoother.

Yes, in S especially, the car is trying to anticipate what you want so if you are driving hard it shifts hard. That goes for both up and down shifting. If you are driving like Granny it shifts like Granny even in S.

Paddle mode is programed to go to 2nd in either S or D mode not just S. Unless of course you have a tune from Chuck COW that puts it in 1st in paddle mode.

If you had bothered to read the owners manual you would know that FORTMORGANAL is correct and the rest of you are wrong. It always starts out in 1st in D and 1st in S until you use the paddles. Then and only then does it start out in 2nd. This has been discussed many times in the past.

From the owners manual:

While the Manual Paddle Shift gear selection system
is active, the transmission will automatically downshift
through the gears as the vehicle slows. The transmission
will select second gear as the vehicle stops. From a stop,
the vehicle will start from and hold second (2) gear unless
the driver manually paddle shifts into a different gear or
selects DRIVE (D). The driver can select first (1) gear for
maximum acceleration from a stop.

So, you're saying it NEVER automatically shifts to first gear at a stop?

Not true for my 09.

In fully-automatic mode (no paddle-shifting), my 09 always shifts to first at a stop. Every time. Automatically. D or S. No paddles.

Let me repeat myself once again so even a caveman can understand lol.....when driving around in D or S without using the paddles. Coming to a stop the tranny only goes to second gear not first gear. 2010 GS A6.

Then your car is broken because mine most def goes to first when in D or S without engaging the paddles.

When the paddles are engaged then yes it goes to 2.

Exactly, you can't in any of the A6 cars. When in D it most definitely engages first gear when stopped, as well as in S.

The Corvette automatic transmission is known for 'delayed' shifting in certain circumstances. From a purely mechanical viewpoint I don't think it's anything to worry about....it's normal.

Actually, in the newer years starting in 2011 you Can use the Paddles in D ... but if you stop using them, they Automatically become Inactive.
Unlike in S, they stay Active until you shut them off.

No Offense but, If your car is doing that, then there's something wrong with it.
When in D or S, .. and the Paddles are Not activated, my Coupe with the A6 Trans, and everyone I know with the A6 Trans, when coming to a complete stop, the Trans down shifts into 1st gear

My 2006 with auto has been going into first gear after a stop for 7 years now in S or D. If in S and paddle mode and you do not manually downshift, it will on its own but it will not go into first. It will start off in 2 if you are still in paddle mode.

Don-Vette - If your car is not going into first in D or S, your car is broken.

So are you dumber than a caveman or is it that you can't comprehend what is written in the owners manual?
