GM changed the supplier, 2005-2007(?) had the genuine Homelink, later cars had the Cars-2-U (or something like that) system. We currently have a 2009 C6 with the new system.
There can be compatibility problems between some opener systems and the C6 transmitter, not sure what combinations produce the problem.
If the newer system will work for you, I'd go for that one. We had the genuine Homelink in our 2006 Corvette, and still have it in our 2005 Toyota and 2011 Toyota. For us, it sucks. Range is very short (like 1 carlength from the door), and "push time" is very critical: pushing for 1.0 seconds is not enough to open the door, pushing for 1.2 seconds opens and reverses the door all at once. Three different cars, three different doors, all the same problem.
But your situation might be different.

I replaced the visor on my C5 with a HomeLink visor that I purchased from a CF sponsor (vettemods). All I had to do is remove the old visor and install the new one. The power comes from same (existing) source as the mirror light and the HomeLink was totally self contained in the visor unit itself. I would think the C6 would be very similar.

If you add a complete visor that has the Homelink or Car2U in it, you should be able to just plug and play. If you plan on just adding the transmitter unit to your existing visor, you will have to hard wire in power and ground to the mirror light wiring. This requires opening up the visor stitching. Many, including myself, have done this and it saves money vs. buying a complete visor. Just be sure you know of a place to re-stitch the visor for you if you are unsure about doing it yourself.
