the z will show its power when the GS hits 4th gear. the gears on the GS are good in 1st, 2nd, 3rd, then the rpms drop big time in 4th. Thats been my experience with the car.
3-4 car win for the z.
The base/GS really needs a cam to run with a z. Given even drivers.
I raced a z when my GS was I/E/tune...the driver was 300+lbs and his GF was a large women. He just got the car and wasn't the best driver.
We ran from a dig 0-75. He was at my rear quarter.
50-140mph. We were even. I was speed shifting and he was just trying to get it in gear.
in short z06 had 500lbs of meat in car with a ****** driver and was able to run with a I/E/ Tune GS with a 220lbs driver who can shift well.

Good post Mike, actual first hand results instead of the usual bench racing b-s.
All the research I've done is the GS is indeed @ 130 lbs heavier & it would need a cam as well as I/E/T to run with a Z. That being said, $3-5K on all four add-ons & the OP would have a very quick, & excellent sounding GS.
When my 5yr PWT warranty runs out I'll do these, of course by then the base C7 will be faster than my GS & the C6Z...

The LS3 will need a cam to come close to a Z. The LS7 is a very strong motor....once the tires stop spinning, which is a bitch, it pulls strong.

How about if you say had a 650rwhp Z06 vs a 650rwhp GS?
Or 900rwhp Z06 vs 900rwhp GS?
Is the 130lbs all that makes the difference or is there another advantage to having a Z06? I would think the longer gears (are they longer?) would help a GS in a highway roll 60-200mph where the Z06 would be better from 0-160mph? Just curious since I am in the market for either a new GS or a used Z06. Either way it will be built to 900-1000rwhp+. Honestly I only like the GS so much for the removable targa top and since I can get a newer one.
Thanks fellas.
And I must say that my stock Z06 was annihilating LS2 Corvettes. I'm sure the LS3 did a little better but it was really much much faster.

I would take not having to shift as fast.......just me though.
Plus, you would be less apt to spin out of the hole with less tranny gearing. It would be PRETTY darn close in all aspects though.

While the GS has the better gearing in 1st(2.97), it has to shift into 2nd at 51 MPH. The higher geared LS7, along with the extra 500 RPM, doesn't have to shift into 2nd until 61 MPH, thus from 51 MPH to 61 MPH the Z06 has lower gearing(2.66) compared to the GS's 2.07. This is true in each gear.
When the GS hits 105 MPH in 3rd gear it must shift into 4th(1:1) gear while the Z06 can stay in 3rd gear(1.30:1) untill it hits 125 MPH. By 125 MPH, it's pretty clear as to which car is out in front.

It's much more then just the difference in gearing. The additional 500 RPM with the LS7 makes a difference.

This is interesting info Joe, I've actually been searching for top speed per gear numbers for my stock '12 GS 6spd D/S LS3.
Assuming top speed in 1st is 51mph, do you know top speeds for 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th & 6th?
R&T used to publish these in their tech data, but I've not seen it anywhere else.

2nd=73
3rd=105
4th=151
and it runs out of horsepower at around 5700-5800 RPM in 5th gear at around 185 MPH. In 6th gear it won't even hit 185 MPH.
