Default Gas Milage

I am the proud owner of my 1st Corvette. Its a 2012 coupe LS 3 with just over 4k miles. Most of my driving has been back road mountain and around town. My milage has remained constant at a 15.9 advarage. Will this improve after the car breaks in a bit? I burn Chevron supreme. My oil life is at 42% and im guessing the dealer must offer a synthetic oil or do they use a standard oil? I am considering a K&N airfilter for the car. What do guys think, a good idea?
Thanks.
Mark

Don't worry about gas mileage. Corvette does great for the type of car it is. Yes, Chevron supreme is good gas for it. Go for a cruise and you'll see average fuel economy in the high 20s. Heck I went on a quick run with some exotics and still managed 22mpg. Ford GT had to worry about finding a gas station so he couldn't follow us back down the same road on the way home since there were no gas stations.

Factory fill is synthetic oil so yes you need to change it with synthetic oil.

K&N is a waste of money. You might get a few more HP that you should not notice, risk your sensors being oil fouled and less filtration. GM did a great job with the OEM filter. It is not restrictive and it does a great job of cleaning the air.

Congrats on the new car though, just go out and enjoy it. Don't worry about gas prices or mileage. Just have fun.

Ok, thanks fkr the feedback Ill pass on the K&N. I love the car and milage definately wasn't a concern, just curious. It is aout time I took it for a good road trip.

Road trips are ALWAYS fun in the C6. Just remember the cruise control is more an anti ticket device in the Corvette.

Manual or automatic? I'll admit I drive like an a-hole, and I get around 20-22 MPG on my 07 LS2 A6. I know the LS3 is bored out a bit more, but those numbers seem a bit low to me unless you are really in it all the time. Break in might help too, but I can't see it doing that much.

On the level turnpike roads around Oklahoma, I get around 23 going 75mph. I get around 30 when I have to cruise at 60 for several miles due to construction.

Back road driving, if you are doing spirited driving you are doing fine, I average about 18 around town when light on the go pedal and a lot less when I am in normal mode. At 80ish I average close to 25 on the hwy with our A6 with 2.73 gearing

My daily routine is pretty much all stop and go driving, and I'm getting about 18.8mpg in my 6 speed LS3.

OP, just like every discussion about gas mileage on every car forum, take these with huge grains of salt.

There is nothing wrong with your mileage.

Obviously, on a tabletop level country road going under 60, AC off, these cars will get very good mileage. Drive it like a sports car and you will be in the low teens all day long.

Thanks to all for your replies. My car is a manual trans. The last 1/2 mile to my house is all up hill and a pretty steep grade. I live in the mountains and the drive into town is lots of fun. I do try to keep the speed down for fear of the county sheriff, deer, and bicycle riders. I am also tring to avoid the " I told you so from the wife". I'm thinking the road trip is a must.
Thanks Again

Mark,
Congratulations on your vette. I never worry over gas mileage before the clock hits 5K or so. There is just to much seating, adjusting, and developing wear patterns. Sounds like your daily driving is a challenge for MPG but you never bought it with the expectation of challenging a Prius on gas mileage. Chevron is a good, top tier gas, so stick with it. (Perhaps a few consecutive tank fulls of a competitor to get an alternative detergent additive.)

My mechanic of a few years ago said "nix" on K&N as it allows to much fine grit to pass on to the engine's guts.

Mobil 1 is the oil specified by GM, why change to something else?

Enjoy your car!

That's not bad. I've never got more than 13.5 on mine in 6,150 miles.

I just took a trip to Colorado in '07 Z06 and back. Some driving at speed. 1895 miles averaged 28.5 mpg. Unreal!

My 2012 grand sport, twelve months old at 4500 miles has averaged exactly 15.9 lifetime. So my experience is like yours. That's largely driving on 45-55 mph suburban roads with lights every couple of miles, plus a lot of idling time. Not to mention moderately aggressive driving when I find myself on a deserted country road. I do much better on highways but not enough highway miles to move the average.

you should get the oil changed right away if it is going to be the first one, how much does your dealer charge (btw should be synthetic)?
