Power steering fluid

Why change it. It never wears out. I have a 1961 Oldsmobile that still has the original power steering fluid, no problems. The car has been in the family since new.

I changed mine at 10k miles just on general principles, but stayed with the standard GM fluid. I don't recall anyone having problems on the C6 that are attributed to the stock fluid.

I had my power steering fluid flushed out and changed with Amsoil power steering fluid at around 30,000 miles. Thus far no problems. In my other car did the same except I used Redline instead which was the first synthetic product I have ever used untill switching over to Amsoil.

I just do a 'drain and fill' once a year, changing out only the fluid that I can syringe out of the reservoir on top of the pump. In other words, I do not drain it from the bottom, or flush it, or purge it.
By replacing the reservoir with synthetic one reservoir full at a time, doing it the easy way, I get the majority of the benefit with none of the hassle.

Maybe 10 years ago, a dealership tech posted that he had seen several cars develop P/S leaks several months after switching to Redline P/S fluid. Not enough he could be sure there was a problem, but enough to make him suspicious. He seemed honest and low key about the situation.
IIRC, the Redline Club hounded him so badly that he stopped posting.
I haven't heard anything since then, so no new info.
As mentioned, I've had good results with the GM fluid, including autocrossing and HPDE in our 2001 and 2006.

I've been using AMSOIL synthetic power steering fluid in my C5 Z06 at the track for years without any problems.
